Marhaba Palace

Marhaba Palace is a large beachfront hotel for divers who want the sea nearby but do not want every non-diving hour to depend on a timetable. A private beach, several pools, a spa, restaurants, bars and evening entertainment give you plenty to do once the mask is back in its case. There is also a nightclub, although the sensible plan after a full day in the water may be a quieter drink first.

The hotel’s website is available in English, French, German, Russian and Arabic, so English-speaking guests are clearly part of the audience the property is set up to address. The overall feel is resort-based rather than boutique: useful if you enjoy having choices close at hand, less so if you are looking for a small, hushed guesthouse.

You are in Port El Kantaoui, Tunisia, directly on the beachfront and close to Kantaoui Beach, around 300 feet away. El Kantaoui Harbour is about a five-minute walk, which gives you an easy option for a change of scenery, a stroll or a coffee without arranging transport. Several cafés and restaurants are also within roughly a mile.

Sousse is close enough for a cultural outing rather than a major expedition. The medina and the Sousse Archaeological Museum are around a 15-minute drive, while the Ribat and other museums sit around 5 to 6 miles away. Monastir Habib Bourguiba International Airport is about 14 miles by road; Enfidha-Hammamet International Airport is about 16 miles away.

Every room has air conditioning, a balcony, an en suite bathroom, satellite television and a hairdryer. That gives you the essentials for a proper reset: cool air after a warm day outside, somewhere to sit with the first drink, and no need to unpack your bathroom kit onto the bed. A dressing room is also available in the bedroom facilities.

For two, the sea-view double room is the obvious choice if the view matters when you open the curtains. The garden-view version keeps the same basic room format while turning the balcony towards the grounds. Couples wanting a little more separation can look at the Deluxe Suite, while the Family Suite uses a king-size bed and sofa beds for a different layout. Do check the exact bedding and occupancy details of the option you choose; the family-labelled categories are not presented as large-group rooms.

Daily housekeeping, free WiFi and room service keep the practical side straightforward. Bathrooms have a bath rather than only a shower, and the hotel also offers non-smoking rooms. The balcony is the useful detail here: a place to sit with wet hair, a book and something cold while the rest of the day slowly leaves your legs.

The main restaurant covers breakfast, lunch and dinner, with international and local dishes served indoors or on the terrace. Breakfast includes continental, Full English/Irish, vegetarian and halal choices, so the morning can be kept familiar or adapted to your habits before heading out. The latter suits an outdoor aperitif; the former is the straightforward place for a drink without turning it into an event. A snack bar, coffee house and beach-front barbecue add flexibility when a full restaurant meal is not quite what you want. Special-diet menus can be requested, and room service is available. In other words, you can eat properly, eat lightly, or retreat to your room without making dinner into a logistical exercise.

Five pools give you several ways to spend a non-diving afternoon: two outdoor pools, including a seawater pool with a jacuzzi and a freshwater pool, plus two heated indoor pools and a separate children’s pool. The indoor options are particularly useful when the weather is less cooperative or when your shoulders would prefer warm water to another round of sun. Sun loungers, beach chairs, umbrellas and pool or beach towels are available.

The O’Club Fitness & Spa includes a heated therapeutic pool, jacuzzi, sauna, massage and Aqua Gym, with a relaxation area for the part of the day when exercise has already done quite enough. A fitness centre is also on site. Tennis, mini golf, table tennis, darts, billiards and a games room provide alternatives when lying still becomes unexpectedly demanding.

Golf is available within 3 km, while evening entertainment includes cabaret, fakir performances and live shows. The kids’ club, playground and children’s pool make the hotel workable for mixed-age trips, and the nightclub, karaoke and live performances give the evening more volume if that is what you are after. There is enough here for a couple to fill a spare day without having to leave the grounds.

Check-in starts from 14:00 and check-out runs until 12:00. The front desk operates around the clock, with private check-in and check-out, luggage storage, concierge service and currency exchange available. That is useful if your flight and your room do not happen to agree on the same timetable. Free private parking is available on site, with no reservation needed.

Children of any age are welcome, cots can be requested for children aged two and under, and pets are not allowed.
