Five-star Kempinski Hotel Muscat sits in Al Mouj, the modern coastal community described as the new heart of Muscat. With 310 rooms and suites, eleven culinary venues, a spa and a full set of facilities for families, it is built for a stay where the hotel itself does much of the organising. You can eat, have a drink, book a treatment, watch sport or simply head for the beach without turning the evening into a transport exercise.

The tone is polished rather than informal, but it is not limited to business travellers in pressed shirts. The beachfront setting, family rooms, kids’ club, bowling and choice of lounges give couples and families plenty to do once the day’s serious work is finished. For a diver, the practical appeal is straightforward: a comfortable base close to the coast, with enough going on on site to avoid spending every evening hunting for dinner.

You are in Muscat, Oman, directly on the coast at Al Mouj. The hotel has access to a stretch of coastline running for more than 3.7 miles, while Al Mouj Beach is about 0.2 miles away. That gives you a proper seaside address rather than a city hotel with a distant view of the water.

Muscat International Airport is 3.2 miles away, around a ten-minute transfer according to the hotel’s location details. The surrounding Al Mouj community adds places to eat and drink beyond the hotel: The Kitchen and The Countdown Sports Lounge are nearby, while Harmlek Cafe, Coffeol and Manis Cafe are all within roughly half a mile. Further afield, Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre is 5.6 miles away and Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque 8.1 miles away.

The standard rooms are made for two, with a super-king bed in the king versions or two single beds in the twin rooms. That distinction matters when you are travelling with a dive partner rather than a partner in life and would rather not negotiate sleeping arrangements after a long day. Sea-view versions are the obvious choice when the room view matters; they let you keep the coast in the picture once you are back indoors.

Families and small groups have more room to spread out, with family rooms, two-bedroom suites and a two-bedroom duplex in the Kempinski Residences. Bukhara works from an open kitchen with North-Western Indian flavours, including its signature Bhatti Ka Lobster, an Omani lobster grilled with Indian spices, yoghurt, garlic, cream and herbs. Jain and vegan menus are also available. Soi Soi takes the route through Thai street-food flavours, while Zale Club & Lounge sits by the shore with Mediterranean food, crafted drinks and a smart-casual evening setting.

There are two named bars, 1897 Cocktail Lounge and Pool Bar, alongside the hotel’s lounges and cafés. The first concentrates on cocktails, international drinks and small bites; the second is a poolside terrace overlooking the Gulf of Oman. Countdown Sports Lounge adds live sport across multiple screens, comfort food such as burgers, steaks, wraps and nachos, and a place to discuss the day’s events without pretending every conversation needs to concern decompression theory. Amwaj Lounge serves afternoon tea and French pastries, while Boulevard Tea House and Café One cover speciality teas, lassis, drinks, breakfast trays and baked snacks.

Kempinski The Spa is the main answer when your shoulders have had enough of carrying kit. Treatments include massages, facials and body treatments, with a relaxation lounge, steam room, sauna and spa facilities. Couples’ massages are available, as are more targeted options for the head, neck, back, feet, hands and full body. The spa also offers body scrubs, wraps and other body treatments, so you can choose between a focused treatment and a longer session of being sensibly horizontal.

The fitness centre includes fitness and yoga classes, personal training and fitness/spa changing facilities. Outdoors, the beach, gardens, sun terrace, loungers and umbrellas give you somewhere to sit without needing to invent an activity. Kayaking and on-site water sports are available, and the hotel also offers tennis, mini golf, table tennis, billiards and a games room. Bowling has its own Cosmic Bowling venue, with drinks and light food after a few games.

Families have Dippy’s Kids Club, children’s entertainment, indoor and outdoor play areas, a playground and a children’s menu.
