This is a place for a full hotel day, not simply a bed near the coast. You can retreat to air-conditioned interiors, order from room service, settle into a cigar lounge or jazz setting, then choose from a sizeable line-up of restaurants. Couples have the privacy of a sea-facing resort, while families have a kids' club, family rooms and child-friendly facilities to keep younger travellers occupied.

The scale matters. With 281 rooms and suites and several large event spaces, this is a substantial resort rather than a small, quiet guesthouse. If you like having dinner, a spa treatment, a swim and a drink all within the same address, the arrangement is straightforward; if you prefer a small property where everyone knows your name, this is a different proposition.

Doha is the setting, and the resort sits on The Pearl-Qatar, a man-made island development off the city. The hotel itself is beachfront, with direct access to a private beach area, so you do not need to cross a road or arrange transport for a spell beside the sea. Katara Beach is about 1.4 miles away, or roughly 4.5 miles by road and around eight minutes by car.

The island gives you places to eat beyond the resort gates. Pearl Social Doha, Toro Toro Doha and Al Sufra are all about 0.1 mile away, while Artist Cafe, Aya Cocoa and Costa Coffee provide nearby options for coffee and something lighter. Doha Golf Club is about 2.5 miles away, and Katara Cultural Village is around 1.9 miles from the hotel, with the journey taking about eight minutes by car.

For a city day, the Museum of Islamic Arts and MIA Park are about 5 miles away by road, while The Corniche is also around 5 miles away. Hamad International Airport is about 14 miles from the resort by road, with a drive of roughly 21 minutes. A hotel shuttle service is available to arrange, alongside concierge and tour-desk support.

Every room and suite has a balcony or terrace facing the Arabian Gulf, The Pearl or the resort grounds. That gives you somewhere to sit with a drink or let the evening air in after the day's activities, while air conditioning keeps the room usable when Doha is doing what Doha does best. Private bathrooms include a bath, hairdryer and bathrobes, and Wi-Fi is free in the rooms.

For a couple, a Deluxe Sea View Room King is the logical choice if the view matters more than having a separate sitting area. The twin versions are the practical answer when you are travelling with a dive companion rather than sharing a super-king bed. If you want space to spread out, change, sit down and still have room for another guest, the Deluxe Suite and Grand Deluxe Suite move the stay into suite territory without going straight to the enormous top categories.

The larger suites are built for groups and extended stays, with the Presidential Suite sleeping up to seven and the Royal Suite doing the same. Al Sufra by Mama Halima serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, working across Lebanese, Cypriot, Syrian, Jordanian and Palestinian traditions, with indoor air-conditioned seating, a terrace and a coffee lounge. Public House is beside the beach, combining a retro American diner and sports bar with hot and cold drinks, draft beer and hand-crafted cocktails.

For something more French, FAUCHON offers pastries, desserts and savoury dishes in a Parisian café setting. Harry's Dolce Vita brings Italian food, while NOZOMI, Amwage, I - Be The Experience, Samaya Lounge, The Stage and The Secret Garden are currently closed. Bohemia Lounge is the named bar: a lobby setting for cocktails, rare spirits, wines, light bites and classic cigars, with views towards the pools, gardens and beach. Room service runs around the clock.

The private beach and outdoor pools give you the simplest post-dive plan: towel, shade and very little decision-making. Sun loungers, beach chairs, umbrellas and pool or beach towels are available, while the gardens and terraces provide other places to sit when you have had enough sand. There is also a kids' pool and a dedicated kids' club, so families can divide the afternoon without turning it into a committee meeting.

Marsa Malaz Spa offers massages and facial treatments, with spa packages, a relaxation area, a hammam, sauna and hot tub among the wellness facilities. Couples' massages are available, as are full-body, back, neck, head, hand and foot treatments. The fitness centre adds personalised training, fitness classes and a personal trainer for anyone who prefers to replace a lazy afternoon with a different kind of exertion.

When you still have energy, the resort has a tennis court, two padel courts, bicycle rental, canoeing and other on-site watersports. Darts and table tennis cover the less ambitious end of the scale. You can also book walking tours, cooking classes and cultural excursions, or look for live sport, temporary art displays and live entertainment at Public House on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Hamad International Airport is about 14 miles away by road, and the drive takes roughly 21 minutes in normal conditions. The hotel offers a shuttle service to arrange, and private parking with valet service is available on site. A concierge, tour desk, currency exchange, luggage storage, ATM and a 24-hour front desk keep the practical side fairly well covered, while lifts and facilities for disabled guests are available.
