Mondrian Doha

You do not come here for beige walls and a corridor that could belong to any business hotel. Mondrian Doha is a design-led city hotel built around bold forms, art and custom interiors by Marcel Wanders, with 211 bedrooms and 59 suites spread across 24 floors. The result is theatrical without pretending to be a quiet little hideaway; this is a place with restaurants, rooftop drinks, a nightclub and enough going on to keep a non-diving evening occupied.

For a couple, the appeal is straightforward: sleep in a proper room, eat well without getting back into a taxi, and have somewhere more interesting than the bedside chair for the evening. Families are catered for too, with family rooms, children’s activities and access to a private beach with a dedicated family zone. You can also choose a room with a terrace or more space to spread out, which matters when your holiday luggage has stopped behaving like luggage and started behaving like a small expedition.

West Bay Lagoon places you in Doha, beside the Zig Zag Towers and close to the city’s entertainment and shopping areas. The hotel is described as being on the seafront, but the practical beach arrangement is a private beach elsewhere: Doha Sands Beach is around 4 miles away, with transport included. Katara Beach is about 1 mile away by the most direct distance, while Katara Cultural Village is roughly 1.2 miles away.

The Pearl, Lusail City, West Bay and Al Dafna are all within easy reach. Lagoona Mall and Place Vendôme Mall cover the shopping side of the equation, while Souq Waqif, Msheireb Downtown Doha, the Museum of Islamic Art, the National Museum of Qatar and Old Doha Port give you rather better reasons to leave the building. Hamad International Airport is around 11 miles away by road, with a drive of about 16 minutes in the stated route conditions.

You have cafés and restaurants close by, including Morimoto, Hudson Tavern and Cut by Wolfgang Puck. The hotel is also near Legtaifiya train station, with the station described as a short drive or a walk away; taxis and ride-hailing services are widely available across Doha.

The standard rooms are built for two and use super-king beds, with separate sitting and work areas rather than asking you to balance a laptop on your knees. Skyline-facing rooms give you the city view, while the terrace version adds outdoor space for the simple business of sitting down with a drink or coffee and looking at Doha without having to go anywhere.

If you are travelling as three, the suite and apartment categories make more sense than trying to perform luggage-based origami in a standard room. The One-Bedroom Apartment with View offers the most practical middle ground, while the larger suites are for travellers who want room to separate sleeping, sitting and working. The Deluxe Terrace Suite is the full-scale option, with a very generous layout and a terrace; it is less a room than a temporary address.

Air conditioning is useful kit in Doha, and soundproof rooms help when the hotel’s nightlife is doing precisely what nightlife was invented to do. Rooms include a minibar, coffee machine, kettle, television with cable and satellite channels, Wi-Fi, a desk, wardrobe space and a private bathroom with bath or shower. Morimoto Doha is the serious dinner booking, serving Japanese cuisine from Chef Masaharu Morimoto. The restaurant includes a sushi bar, a main dining room and private dining rooms, with a menu that runs from lobster sushi rice risotto to Wagyu fillets. It is recognised by the Michelin Guide, which is useful shorthand here: this is not the place for a hurried plate of something vaguely Asian before bed.

Hudson Tavern keeps things looser with hand-crafted burgers, snacks, desserts and live sport. Ellamia is the daytime stop for coffee, pastries, desserts, salads and poke bowls. On the rooftop, PATIO Doha serves Mediterranean fusion with city and sunset views, live DJs and a terrace setting. For later hours, Rise sits on the 27th floor, while Smoke & Mirrors combines cocktails and cigars in a dedicated lounge, and Black Orchid brings the nightclub option with a DJ, two bars and a dance floor.

The indoor pool is the sensible answer when the heat outside has become personal. You also have complimentary use of the hotel gym and ESPA facilities, including separate male and female spa areas, relaxation spaces and a heated experience garden. ESPA has 12 treatment rooms, including a private couples’ treatment room, alongside a traditional Turkish hammam and heated daybeds.

Treatments include massages, body treatments, facial and beauty services, manicures and pedicures. There is a sauna, steam room and spa lounge, as well as a 24-hour fitness centre with personal trainers available on request. You can use the place actively or simply allow your muscles to stop filing complaints; both approaches are legitimate.

The included transfer to Doha Sands Beach opens up a different sort of afternoon, with calm Arabian Gulf waters, an outdoor street-food district, multi-sport courts, a family zone and a shisha terrace. Back in the city, golf is available nearby, while cultural outings can take you to Souq Waqif, Msheireb Downtown Doha, the Museum of Islamic Art, the National Museum of Qatar or Old Doha Port. Evening programming includes themed events at Morimoto, live music, sport broadcasts and nightlife at Black Orchid and Rise.

Check-in starts at 3pm and check-out runs until noon. The minimum age for check-in is 18, and every guest or visitor must register at the Front Desk with an original physical passport or a valid Qatar ID or GCC ID. A physical document is the important part here; a photograph of one on a phone will not do the same job.

Airport transfers are available, and taxis, Uber and Karwa are widely used for travel around Doha. The hotel also offers a daily scheduled return transfer to Doha Sands Beach. Complimentary valet parking and underground private parking are available, with no reservation needed for the private parking.

Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. You also have a 24-hour front desk, concierge service, luggage storage, currency exchange, an ATM, a tour desk, private and express check-in or check-out, room service, daily housekeeping and laundry services. Pets are allowed, with charges potentially applying. The property’s policy also states that alcohol consumption is not allowed, and prohibited items include shisha, speakers, candles, knives, hotplates, gas cylinders, charcoal and outside alcoholic beverages.
