Oure Lodge Beach Resort

Think of this as a place for divers who like their land-based hours to stay uncomplicated: a tropical bungalow, a beach close enough for a quick swim, and dinner without having to leave the resort. Oure Lodge Beach Resort sits among coconut palms and tropical gardens beside Kanumera Bay, with wooden accommodation in a contemporary tropical style.

You can spend the day moving between the beach, the pool and the shade of the gardens, then settle on your balcony with a cold drink and no urgent reason to go anywhere. The atmosphere is geared towards sea, sand and slow evenings rather than a packed programme. Couples have the beach-facing setting; families have a dedicated bungalow option with two separate bedrooms.

You are in Vao, on New Caledonia's Isle of Pines, directly beside Kanumera Bay. The resort has direct access to a white-sand beach, while the protected lagoon and the coconut grove put the water and the greenery right outside your door. Corals with colourful fish are only a few metres from the hotel, so a mask and snorkel can take you straight into the day's first underwater distraction.

Kuto Bay is about 1 mile away on foot, and the journey takes around 20 minutes. Kou Bugny café and Restaurant Kou-Gny are also around 1.2 miles away, giving you an alternative outing when you fancy eating elsewhere. Île des Pins Airport is about 5 miles from the resort and roughly a 15-minute drive.

The accommodation is arranged as bungalows and private rooms, with the choice mainly coming down to how much space, privacy and beach access you want. A Garden Bungalow suits a couple who prefer a garden setting and a simpler base. For the full coastal version, the Beach Front Bungalow places you closest to the bay; the Sea View Bungalow gives the view priority without putting you directly on the sand.

Travelling with children or a larger group? The Family Bungalow has two separate bedrooms and room for up to six people, so you do not have to turn every bedtime into a minor logistical exercise. Children of any age are welcome, with cots available on request for younger children; extra beds are not available.

Every air-conditioned unit has a balcony, refrigerator, kettle and tea or coffee-making facilities. That means chilled water when you come back warm and tired, and a kettle when the day has started before your brain has fully joined it. A shower, hairdryer and complimentary toiletries are included, along with a flat-screen satellite television. Daily housekeeping keeps the practical side of the stay moving, while the balcony gives you somewhere to sit outside the room.

Breakfast is a buffet with continental and vegetarian choices, including eggs, sausages, bacon, pastries, cakes, yoghurt, salads and fresh fruit. It gives you enough variety for an early start, whether you want something substantial before heading out or a quieter plate of fruit and yoghurt before the sea gets your attention.

At lunchtime, Banian sits on the beach with a view across Kanumera Bay. Lunch is served from midday to 2pm, and the setting does a fair amount of the conversational work for you. In the afternoon, snacks are available from 2.30pm to 5pm: useful when lunch has worn off but dinner still feels some distance away.

Dinner moves to Kanumera Restaurant from 7pm to 9pm, with a menu combining local and Western flavours. Fresh seafood is part of the offer, including Isle of Pines lobster. There is also one bar for the drink that marks the end of the day, while room service gives you a quieter option when you would rather eat without changing out of whatever passed for clothing after the beach.

The beach is the main piece of equipment here, and you can reach it directly from the resort. The water of Kanumera Bay is calm and clear, with snorkelling available just off the shore and complimentary use of kayaks and snorkelling gear. A single outdoor pool gives you another place to cool down when you have had enough salt for one day.

When you want to stay active without starting another expedition, there is table tennis and pétanque. Bicycles are available for hire, and the tour desk can arrange a guided island tour with several stops, a pirogue trip in Upì Bay, a boat excursion around the lagoon and nearby islets, or a transfer to the natural swimming pool.

The useful distinction is that these activities do not require you to build an elaborate plan around them. You can snorkel, paddle, swim or sit in the gardens, then return to the bungalow before lunch. For a couple, that leaves room for an outing without turning the whole day into a timetable; for a family, the choice of water and land-based activities helps keep the peace between generations.

An airport shuttle is available between Île des Pins Airport and the resort, and transfers are also available to and from Kuto Wharf. Arrange the service with the hotel before arrival. Free private parking is available on site, with no reservation required, and luggage storage is available if your travel schedule leaves you with time to fill.

Check-in runs from 2pm to 10pm, and you should tell the hotel your expected arrival time. You will need photo identification and a credit card at check-in. Check-out is from 6am to 10am, which covers an early departure without requiring a heroic breakfast strategy.

Wi-Fi is free in the public areas. Laundry, ironing facilities, a safety deposit box and daily housekeeping cover the small practical matters, while the tour desk handles island activities. Payment by cash is accepted, and pets are not allowed.
