Addis Ababa Bole International Airport ADD

If you qualify, the airline can provide your hotel, meals, transfers and transit visa. That matters here, because leaving the airport requires a visa.

How long is your layover?

2 hrs

Everything in Terminal 2 is walkable, but security can take 1 hour.

  • The airline's international connections use the same terminal. Follow the “Transit” or “Transfer” signs; there is no internal shuttle.
  • ⚠️ Security is carried out AT THE GATES, in addition to the check when you enter departures. For some destinations with enhanced checks, it can take up to 1 hour. If your onward flight is one of them, a short connection is a gamble.
  • Neither the airport nor the airline publishes a minimum connection time. If the connection fails, you have no official benchmark to fall back on.

2–5 hrs

The terminal is basic: pay for comfort, or wait it out.

  • Airport Wi-Fi is free after registration, but bandwidth is limited. Do not rely on it for an important call.
  • There are plenty of free waiting areas, but no fitted-out rest space and no official quiet zone.
  • ⚠️ There are no free showers and no documented left-luggage facility, either airside or landside. Your kit stays with you.
  • That makes the lounge the only real comfort option. On an overnight layover, it makes more sense than it does at most airports.

5–10 hrs

Leaving requires a visa though your ticket may already cover it.

  • NO VISA if you remain in the international transit area and your layover is under 12 hours, no formalities are required. You cannot leave the airport.
  • VISA REQUIRED this is a proper visa, not visa-free entry. Leaving the airport, even for 3 hours, requires a transit visa or an e-visa. You can arrange it online in advance or on arrival.
  • ⭐ Unless your layover qualifies for the airline’s programme at the next stage: your transit visa is then issued free on presentation of the voucher given at check-in.
  • The airport does not run city tours. Private tours exist, require at least 8 hours of layover in most cases, and you must also allow time for the visa.

10 hrs +

⭐ This is where the airline may take care of the lot subject to conditions.

  • Ethiopian Airlines provides accommodation for passengers whose layover is BETWEEN 8 AND 24 HOURS: hotel, meals, transfers and the transit visa. It is the most complete arrangement among the hubs covered here.
  • ⚠️ The conditions matter. BOTH your inbound and outbound flights must be operated by the airline and appear on ONE ticket. If a shorter connection to your destination existed and you deliberately chose the longer layover, you may be excluded.
  • Your accommodation voucher is issued at CHECK-IN, before departure. If you have not received it, ask at the airline desk or the transfer desk on arrival. Do not wait until you are standing at immigration.
  • On arrival, present the voucher at immigration for the transit visa, collect your baggage, clear customs, then go to the airline’s transport desk for the shuttle.
  • ⚠️ Outside this programme, there is NO airside hotel in Addis Ababa. Overnight means staying in town, with the required visa.

What catches travellers out

Leaving the airport requires a proper visa

Unlike Dubai, Istanbul, Bangkok or Singapore, where European passport holders enter freely, Ethiopia requires a transit visa or e-visa to leave the terminal, even for a few hours. Arrange it in advance or obtain it on arrival.

The free overnight stay is not automatic

You need 2 flights on the airline, on a single ticket, with a layover of 8 to 24 hours. If a shorter connection to your destination existed, choosing the longer one may exclude you. Check your eligibility with the airline before building your layover around it.

No left luggage and no free shower

There is no documented left-luggage facility on either side of the airport, and no public shower. For a hub of this size, it is an odd omission. Plan for it rather than hunting for it.

Why not wait it out in peace?

In Terminal 2, you can buy Plaza Premium access as a single visit. It is also the only straightforward place to have a shower.

First misconception dealt with: this lounge is not reserved for business-class passengers. You can buy access whatever airline you are flying and whatever cabin is on your ticket.

There are no free public showers at Bole. Every shower is inside a lounge and included with entry.

The home airline also sells access to its own lounges for passengers without status. ⚠️ Its showers have specific rules: register in advance, at least 1 hour before departure, and expect a short slot. This is not somewhere to linger.

The terminal itself has neither a proper rest area nor left-luggage facilities. It is seats or a lounge, with nothing in between.

Expect the equivalent of an airport sit-down meal for a few quiet hours, including a shower.

Where to sleep during the layover?

NO VISASkylight In-Terminal Hotel

The nearest bed to the terminal, without crossing the city.

  • This is the shortest-distance option when your overnight layover does not qualify for airline support.
  • ⚠️ Despite its name, assume that you must clear immigration and therefore hold a visa. Check when booking: the answer changes everything.

VISA REQUIREDEthiopian Skylight Hotel

The large airport-side hotel where the airline places eligible layover passengers.

  • This is the hotel used by the airline’s layover programme, with an organised shuttle. You can also book it normally by the night if you do not qualify.
  • As everywhere here, you must enter Ethiopia. The visa is free only when you have been issued the accommodation voucher.

The diver’s reflex

Ask for your voucher at check-in, not on arrival

This is the move that decides your night. The accommodation voucher covers your hotel, meals and, crucially, the FREE TRANSIT VISA. You receive it at the check-in desk for your departing flight, before you have even left home airport. Miss it and you can arrive in Addis with nothing arranged, then have to organise both visa and hotel. If your layover is between 8 and 24 hours on a single ticket, ask for it while checking in your dive bag.

Gate security can take 1 hour and your kit is the sort that slows it down

Checks take place at the boarding gate here, with enhanced screening for certain destinations. Hand luggage full of torches, flashes, spare batteries and a camera housing is precisely the sort of thing that prompts a manual inspection. Pack it so you can open and close the bag quickly, then get to the gate earlier than you normally would.

2 power banks, and do not use them in flight

The home airline publishes a two-part rule, and the second part catches people out. The first is generous: a maximum of 2 power banks, up to 160 Wh more permissive than its Qatari neighbour, which stops at 100 Wh. The second allows no exceptions: you must not use them on board. Not to power a device, not to recharge them from the aircraft socket, and never in the overhead locker. On an overnight flight towards the Indian Ocean, that means your housing, dive computer and torches leave Addis fully charged or arrive flat.
