You use Dar es Salaam to reach Zanzibar, Mafia or Pemba. It is also one of the few airports on this list where a European passport does not get you in freely: you need a visa, obtained on arrival or online.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
Three separate buildings, with nothing linking them airside.
- Terminal 3 handles international flights, Terminal 2 domestic and regional flights, and Terminal 1 private aviation. Moving from Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 means separate buildings a short walk or shuttle, depending on the situation but NEVER a continuous secure connection.
- You therefore go through security again before your onward flight, and immigration if you change buildings.
- No minimum connection time is published. You have no official benchmark, so allow plenty of margin, particularly with dive kit.
2–5 hrs
This is a modest airport: the lounge is more or less the only answer.
- Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport.
- ⚠️ There is no fitted rest area, no quiet room and NO left-luggage facility. Everything stays with you.
- ⚠️ Free showers are marked airside in Terminal 3, but do not build your stopover around them. If you find them, consider it a result.
5–10 hrs
⚠️ Going out or simply changing terminals costs you a visa.
- NO VISA if you remain airside in Terminal 3, no formalities are required. But you cannot leave the airport or reach the regional terminal.
- VISA REQUIRED and it is a proper visa. Tanzania does not exempt European passports: you need a visa on arrival or an e-visa requested online. None of the nationalities served here appears on the exemption lists.
- Apply online before you leave home. The visa-on-arrival queue arrives at exactly the point when you have a connection to catch, with twenty-five kilos in tow.
- The airport runs no city tour.
10 hrs +
You sleep nearby in straightforward accommodation and you need to enter the country.
- ⚠️ Dar es Salaam has no documented airside hotel. Sleeping means clearing immigration, and therefore having a visa.
- VISA REQUIRED the airport area has several straightforward places to stay, often with a transfer. They are modest establishments: confirm the shuttle and reception hours before booking.
- No airline-funded overnight programme is documented.
- The island timetable makes the decision. The first flight to MAFIA leaves at seven fifteen and the last at sixteen forty-five, with eight rotations a day. A night arrival in Dar es Salaam therefore means sleeping locally: nothing leaves before morning, and the early domestic departure wave is the busiest part of the day.
What catches travellers out
European passports do not enter Tanzania without a visa
Unlike neighbouring South Africa, no European nationality appears on the exemption lists. Visa on arrival or e-visa: either way, you prepare and pay for it including for a simple connection that requires a change of building.
The three terminals do not connect airside
They are close together, sometimes only a few minutes on foot, which makes the transfer look like a formality. Immigration and checking in again take the time, not the walk.
The free shower is hearsay
Free showers are marked airside in Terminal 3, but do not rely on finding them. If arriving washed matters to you, use the lounge instead.

Terminal 3 has two lounges you can buy into at the door, with no card or status required. That is more or less the airport’s only comfort.
Start by dropping the usual assumption: these lounges are not reserved for a particular travel class. You can buy access at the door or use a lounge programme, whatever ticket you hold.
The terminal otherwise offers very little: no fitted rest area, no quiet room and no left-luggage facility. It is the departure-hall seats or the lounge. There is no middle ground.
⚠️ They are in Terminal 3, the international terminal. If your onward flight uses the regional terminal, you leave them behind: the buildings do not connect airside.
For you, the appeal is practical: a socket for torches and camera housing before the island, and somewhere to put down your cabin bag.
Expect the equivalent of a seated airport meal for a few quiet hours.

- It is built around connecting passengers: the sort of place where you arrive late and leave early.
- Despite its name, assume you must clear immigration and therefore hold a visa. Confirm the transfer when you book.
A conventional local hotel when you want a reception rather than an entry code.
- Accommodation around the airport is straightforward and without major brands: judge it by the shuttle and overnight reception rather than its stars.
- As everywhere here, you need to have entered Tanzania.
The diver’s reflex
Your flight to Zanzibar, Mafia or Pemba leaves from another building
The islands are reached from the regional terminal, which does not connect airside with the international terminal. You must therefore enter Tanzania: immigration, visa, collect your dive bag, move to another building, check in again and clear security again. This is not a connection. It is an arrival followed by a departure, so plan it that way.
Apply for the visa online, not in the queue
You can obtain the visa on arrival, which is precisely the problem: the queue comes at the worst moment, between a night flight and a small aircraft to the island, while you are carrying all your kit. You can request the e-visa from home in a few minutes. It is the best hour you will spend on the trip.

Nobody warns divers about this, though it catches exactly the way you pack. Mainland Tanzania bans plastic carrier bags of any thickness, and you should not bring them at all neither as bags nor to wrap anything in your hold luggage or cabin bag. Hand-in points stand at entry points. A wet wetsuit, boots or charger often ends up in a supermarket bag; those stay behind on arrival. The exception is explicit: zip bags used for toiletries are permitted because you are expected to keep them and take them home. Pack in fabric, mesh or resealable zip bags instead, and take something suitable for isolating wet kit on the return journey.
