At slack water the current may be slight, but it can strengthen through Jina Pass as the tide changes, making a drift dive and good surface coordination sensible. Visibility is commonly described as ranging from 10 to 30 metres, so the same site can feel very different from one outing to the next. Most useful sites are reached by boat, although the shore dive in Chole Bay offers sandy bottoms and seagrass without the traditional reef landscape. The emphasis is observation and natural movement, not caves, wreck penetration or technical depth.

Mafia’s larger-animal interest centres on whale sharks, turtles, rays and occasional big pelagics, with sightings linked to seasonal passages and local conditions rather than a dependable daily schedule. Around Jina Reef, divers can look over shallow reef, gravel and wall habitat for resident reef life, while the current may bring larger animals through the pass. The shore muck dive rewards slower searching: sandy bottoms and seagrass beds conceal cryptic creatures that are easy to miss when divers are expecting a conventional coral scene. Turtles are a regular part of the wider destination’s wildlife picture. Rays and larger pelagics are more occasional, so the sensible approach is to enjoy the habitat and treat encounters with big animals as a bonus rather than the sole reason for booking the trip.

Mafia is best approached as a tide-led destination rather than one with a single, fixed diving season. The protected Chole Bay shore dive can be made throughout the year, while sites outside that shelter are more dependent on tidal movement and the day’s sea conditions. This matters particularly at Jina Pass, where a change in tide can turn a gentle section into a stronger drift. A seven- to ten-day stay gives the boat schedule room to work around those windows and leaves time for both reef diving and muck diving. Wildlife encounters, including larger pelagics, should be regarded as seasonal possibilities rather than calendar promises.

Mafia suits all levels when the day’s site is matched to the diver. The Chole Bay shore muck dive is suitable for beginners and experienced divers alike, while Jina Reef is better suited to Advanced Open Water divers or BSAC, PADI and SSI equivalents who are comfortable with boat diving and variable current. Drift-diving experience is useful for Jina Pass. Nitrox is helpful on several consecutive diving days, especially for divers planning repeated boat outings rather than an occasional single immersion.

From London Heathrow, Gatwick or Manchester, the journey to Mafia is built around reaching Tanzania first and then making an internal connection to the island. The final approach is either a domestic flight to Mafia or a road journey to a coastal port followed by a ferry or boat, depending on the trip’s arrangements. It is therefore worth allowing generous margins between connections: a missed internal link or boat movement can cost a full day on an island itinerary. Once on Mafia, divers normally reach the dive centre from nearby accommodation on foot or by an organised local transfer. The diving itself is boat-based, so proximity to the jetty matters more than being near a major road or town.

Put the diving early in the stay, leaving later days available if a sea state, tide or boat rotation disrupts the original plan. Reserve boat places ahead of time where possible, since the local operation is smaller and the most convenient departures can fill quickly. Bring a personal mask and dive computer; replacement equipment is less readily available than at a highly standardised resort hub. Do not arrive expecting every site to be a calm, interchangeable reef: ask for a profile suited to current experience, particularly before entering Jina Pass. Keep a little slack in the itinerary for missed connections and tide-led departures. Several repetitive diving days make Nitrox worth considering. If travelling with a non-diver, accommodation on the more accessible north-western or coastal side of the island reduces wasted time on local transfers. A liveaboard is possible, but it is not essential; Mafia works particularly well as a shore-based island holiday with diving arranged around tides and boat movements.
