San Pedro Sula fits into one building but Roatán and Utila still require another flight or a ferry, and a British passport holder must have a Honduran visa BEFORE departure, not on arrival.
How long is your layover?
2 hrs
One building, all on foot but no official minimum connection time is published.
- SAP occupies one building, split into domestic and international concourses: everything is done on foot, with no shuttle.
- Guides recommend arriving 2 hrs 30 minutes to 3 hours before an international flight and 1 hr 30 minutes to 2 hours before a domestic flight a useful guide when there is no official minimum connection time.
- For any change of aircraft, allow for another security screening: nothing indicates a transit area that avoids it.
2–5 hrs
The Wi-Fi lasts an hour for free for anything else, carry bottled water.
- Wi-Fi is free for at least 60 minutes; the conditions beyond that are unpublished.
- Tap water is not potable buy bottled water rather than filling your flask.
- Toilets are free throughout the terminal; food outlets including Dunkin’, Subway, McDonald’s and Pizza Hut, some open 24 hours, plus duty-free shops, are paid-for.
- Salas Internacionales VIP Club, described above, remains the sensible place to sit quietly.
5–10 hrs
NO VISA for most Europeans except British passport holders, who must already have theirs.
- NO VISA for French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese passports, for stays of up to 90 days a CA-4 allowance shared with Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua.

What catches travellers out
British passport holders need their visa BEFORE departure
Unlike EU passports, British citizens have no visa on arrival: the Honduran visa must be obtained before the journey, not at the SAP desk.
The CA-4 shares your 90 days across four countries
Time already spent in Guatemala, El Salvador or Nicaragua is deducted from your Honduran allowance and leaving the airport for the city uses that allowance too.
Why not wait it out in peace?
At San Pedro Sula, two identical lounges can be bought at the door, without status or a membership card.
Salas Internacionales VIP Club has two airside locations in departures one on the 3rd floor near Gate 6, the other on the 2nd floor near Gate 7 generally open from 4 am to 1 am every day.
You pay for access at reception: a same-day boarding pass is enough, and no loyalty card is required.
Priority Pass, LoungeKey and Diners Club are also accepted, subject to the conditions attached to your card.
⚠️ An old name, “TACA Salones VIP”, still appears in some card networks: it is obsolete, so look for “Salas Internacionales VIP Club” at the airport.
Allow the equivalent of a sit-down airport meal for a few quiet hours.

Several properties are in the city or near the airport, reached by taxi or ride-hailing vehicle nothing exists airside.

Roatán and Utila require another flight or a ferry
The Bay Islands are not reached directly from the SAP apron: allow a short flight or travel via La Ceiba and then take a ferry, 3 to 5 hours in total depending on the connections. Underwater scooters and large DPVs almost always exceed standard baggage limits they generally travel as freight, not in passenger hold baggage.
Torch and housing batteries: cabin baggage, below 160 Wh
Spare lithium batteries travel in the cabin, protected against short circuits; between 100 and 160 Wh, airline approval is required, and nothing is accepted above that.
