At Kuala Lumpur, your layover comes down to one question: do both flights leave from the same terminal? If they do not, you are entering Malaysia, collecting your bags and starting again.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
Same terminal, it can work. Different terminals, forget it.
- ⚠️ Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are separate buildings with no airside connection. Moving between them means leaving airside, clearing immigration, collecting your bags, checking in again and passing security. Two hours is not enough.
- Within Terminal 1, however, it is straightforward: the main building and satellite are linked airside by a free automated shuttle taking three minutes.
- Allow a minimum of 90 minutes when an international flight is involved. Between the two terminals, guides recommend two and a half to three hours, and three to four hours when your flights are on separate tickets.
- A free shuttle runs between the terminals around the clock, every 10 to 20 min, landside. A train also connects them; it is faster but paid.
2–5 hrs
Enough time to eat and wash and here, the shower may cost nothing.
- At Terminal 2, airside near Pier P in international departures, there is a free shower. It is basic cold water, no towel and no toiletries but it exists, and few people know about it.
- Elsewhere, showers are paid: the transit hotel sells shower-only access without requiring a room, and lounges include them with entry.
- Wi-Fi is free in both terminals. Depending on the area, you may need to register with an email address or telephone number.
- ⚠️ Left-luggage facilities are landside only, in both terminals. If you remain airside, you keep everything with you: there is no luggage storage in the transit area.
5–10 hrs
You can go out, but nothing is arranged for you here.
- NO VISA You can comfortably spend half a day airside between rest areas, the shower and the lounge.
- VISA REQUIRED Most European passports can enter Malaysia without a visa for a short stay. ⚠️ You must still complete the Malaysian digital arrival card ONLINE before presenting yourself at immigration. This is not a form to complete at the desk.
- ⚠️ There is no permanent official airport city tour. The “free layover tours” you may see advertised are private commercial offers whose free element depends on conditions. Do not build a layover around one.
10 hrs +
You sleep and, unusually, the better bed is on the right side of immigration.
- NO VISA Kuala Lumpur is one of the few hubs with several transit-area hotels in Terminal 1, on the satellite side. They can be booked by the hour, are for connecting passengers holding a boarding pass, and also sell shower-only access.
- VISA REQUIRED The main airport hotel is linked to Terminal 1 by a covered walkway: you can walk there, but only after immigration.
- ⚠️ Do not count on an airline-provided overnight stay. Where it exists, it requires that no shorter connection was possible, excludes certain fare classes and award tickets, and must be requested in advance for a voucher to be issued. Check with the airline rather than turning up at the desk.
What catches travellers out
Two terminals, effectively two airports
This is Kuala Lumpur’s central trap. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are treated as separate entities: no airside connection means immigration, baggage collection, check-in and security every time you move between them. Allow two and a half to three hours, and three to four if your tickets are separate.
Complete the arrival card beforehand, not at the desk
Malaysia requires a digital arrival card, completed online before you present yourself at immigration. It also applies to a simple terminal change, because that requires entry into the country. Complete it before boarding, not while standing in the queue.
Left luggage is only useful if you go out
It is landside in both terminals, open around the clock and paid. There is no equivalent airside: a long wait in transit means carrying all your cabin baggage with you.

At Terminal 1, the Plaza Premium in the Contact Pier can be bought as a single entry, with no card or status required shower included.
Clear up the first misconception: a lounge is not reserved for business-class passengers. Any passenger can buy entry here, whatever airline is printed on the ticket.
Do the sum nobody usually does. Three hours in the concourse means two drinks and a meal eaten standing up, in the noise, while keeping an eye on your bag. For the same outlay, you get an armchair, buffet, shower and a socket of your own.
For a diver, there is another reason, and it is not trivial: this is where you can recharge torches, housings and batteries before heading to an island where power is not guaranteed. Kuala Lumpur is often the last dependable point before the boat.
The Malaysia Airlines lounges you may see mentioned are not sold at the door: access comes with the ticket or status.
Expect the equivalent of a seated airport meal for three to five hours of quiet, including a shower.

Sleep in Terminal 1 without entering Malaysia, by the hour or overnight.
- You can book in time blocks, which suits a layover that does not justify a full night.
- You remain airside throughout: no immigration, no baggage belt and no fresh check-in when you wake up.

- You reach it on foot, with no shuttle or taxi useful when you are carrying twenty-five kilos of kit.
- Consider it only if your passport allows entry into Malaysia, including a digital arrival card completed in advance.

The diver’s reflex
Your Borneo flight may leave from a different terminal
Tawau is the route to Sipadan and Mabul, reached by a domestic flight from Kuala Lumpur. Depending on the airline, that flight leaves from Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 and the two do not connect airside. Check the terminal of your second flight BEFORE booking a short connection: it is the one detail that changes everything here.
Separate tickets mean the scales twice
If your domestic flight is on a separate ticket common with low-cost airlines your bags will not be checked through to the final destination. You collect them, check them in again, and your dive bag goes back on the scales at a domestic counter with a smaller allowance. Arrange extra baggage online before you leave.
The free shower exists; bring the towel
At Terminal 2, airside near Pier P: cold water, no towel, no toiletries. It is rudimentary, but after twelve hours in the air and before the final hop to the island, it changes the day. The microfibre towel already in your bag will do provided you put it in your cabin baggage.
