Ivato International Airport TNR
Tananarive is the unavoidable stop for Nosy Be and your onward flight is domestic, so you must enter Madagascar. There is no transit visa here: you need a tourist visa.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
A compact airport complex, all walkable but with no published minimum connection time.
- The international and domestic terminals form a compact complex, and you walk between them. There is no shuttle between the buildings.
- You go through security again on every connection, and through immigration when you enter the domestic area.
- ⚠️ Neither the airport nor airlines publish a minimum connection time. Ask your airline rather than trusting a figure found online.
2–5 hrs
The terminal has been refurbished, and it shows but Wi-Fi is rationed.
- ⚠️ Wi-Fi is free, but this is the unusual bit: 4 hours in total over a four-day window. Once you have used the allowance, you must wait several days before reconnecting. Do not spend it all on arrival if you need to update your dive centre later.
- The international departure lounge has a free comfort area with ergonomic seating and power sockets, plus a work area. There is also a children's area on the domestic side.
- ⚠️ There are no free showers and no luggage storage in the terminal. The only storage is in the lounge, for its customers.
5–10 hrs
⚠️ There is no transit visa here: leaving means entering the country.
- NO VISA if you remain in the international area without passing immigration, you need no formalities.
- ⚠️ VISA REQUIRED Madagascar does not issue a transit visa. Any departure from the international area, even for an hour or simply to reach the domestic terminal, requires a tourist visa. You can obtain it on arrival or online beforehand.
- For short stays, the visa itself is free, though administrative charges remain payable on arrival. Beyond 15 days, it becomes chargeable. Check the rule for your passport: none of the nationalities served here is exempt.
- The airport runs no city tours.
10 hrs +
You sleep nearby and the choice around Ivato is better than you might expect.
- ⚠️ There is no airside hotel. Sleeping means passing immigration, so you need a tourist visa.
- VISA REQUIRED several hotels sit a few hundred metres from the terminal, some with a continuous free shuttle. That is useful when your Nosy Be flight leaves at first light.
- Confirm the shuttle and its overnight operation when booking. “Free shuttle” does not always mean “at every hour”.
- No airline free-night scheme operates here.
What catches travellers out
Madagascar does not issue a transit visa
This is the most expensive catch on the page. There is only a tourist visa: as soon as you leave the international area including simply to reach domestic flights that is what you need, with the associated administrative charges.
The lounge shower costs extra on top of entry
In most lounges, a shower is included. Not here: lounge access and the shower are separate costs. If arriving on the island washed is the plan, check the full arrangement before paying.
Free Wi-Fi runs out for four days
You get 4 hours, and once they are used, you cannot reconnect for several days. It is the strictest rule across these thirty-six airports. Use it with some restraint.
Why not wait it out in peace?
Primeclass in Terminal C is open 24 hours and contains the airport’s only luggage storage facility.
Clear up the first misconception: this lounge is not restricted to a travel class. You can pay to enter without airline status, after security and the duty-free shops, near gate 22A. It stays open 24 hours, which matters when your island flight leaves at dawn.
⭐ Its useful feature is not the usual one: customers get FREE luggage storage. It is the only facility of its kind at the airport, airside or landside. If you have been carrying a heavy cabin bag for six hours, that alone may justify going in.
⚠️ The shower costs EXTRA on top of lounge entry. Ask before you pay; it is not included.
The terminal also has a free comfort area in the international departure lounge, with ergonomic seating and power sockets. For two or three hours, that may do the job.
Expect the equivalent of an airport sit-down meal for a few quiet hours, with the shower extra.
See the lounge →Where to sleep during the layover?
Three hundred metres away, with a continuous free shuttle: the straightforward choice for a short night.
- Proximity is the point: with dive kit and an early domestic flight, every minute of transfer counts twice.
- You must enter Madagascar, so you need a tourist visa because there is no transit visa.
A step up in comfort, still within the airport area.
- Choose it when your stopover warrants a proper night rather than a few hours of sleep.
- Check the shuttle timetable: island flights leave early, and arranging a night taxi in Tananarive takes planning.

The diver’s reflex
Your Nosy Be flight is domestic so you must enter the country
This is the bit to understand before you travel. Reaching the domestic terminal means passing immigration, collecting your dive bag and checking it in again. Madagascar does not issue a transit visa, so you need a tourist visa even if you never leave the airport. Apply online before departure: the arrival queue is a poor place to discover the rule.
⭐ Declare your dive bag 24 hours before the Nosy Be flight
This is the most restrictive rule on this page, and it starts the day before. On the domestic network, sporting equipment in the hold must be added to your booking no later than 24 hours before departure, then the airline confirms whether it accepts it. This is not paperwork for paperwork’s sake: the aircraft is a turboprop, the hold is small, and excess is accepted only on the day at the desk, if the aircraft load permits. Then come the awkward figures: 20 kg in the hold and 5 kg in the cabin. Your long-haul cabin bag carrying regulator, dive computer and camera housing is likely to weigh two or three times that. Sort the balance before leaving Europe, not beside the belt at Ivato.
The airport’s only luggage storage is inside the lounge
There is no luggage storage at Ivato, airside or landside, except inside the lounge, where it is free for customers. On a six-hour stop with a cabin bag full of regulator, dive computer and camera housing, that is a practical benefit: lounge entry also gives you somewhere to put the lot down.
Four hours of Wi-Fi, running across four days
The allowance is unusual and catches people out: 4 hours of free connection in total, valid over a four-day window. Use it all on arrival and you cannot update your dive centre or boat about a delay when it matters. Keep some for the return, or arrange a local SIM.
