Hilda's Homestay

The English-speaking team makes communication straightforward from the start. The place suits a couple particularly well, while a child can also share the suite. It is intended for guests looking for a calm base in Diani, not for parties or late-night noise; quiet hours run from 22:00 to 06:00.

The address is on Diani Beach Road in Diani Beach, Kenya, in the Galu Beach area. Galu Beach is about 0.3 miles away on foot, while Diani Beach is roughly 0.3 miles from the property. That puts sand, sea and the usual post-dive decision — shower first or food first — within easy reach.

Colobus Conservation is about 0.3 miles away, and Kaya Kinondo Sacred Forest is 3.8 miles from the guesthouse. Restaurants are close by, including Colobus Shade at around 350 metres and The Salty Squid Beach Bar & Restaurant and Blue Marlin Beach Restaurant at roughly 0.8 miles. For a drink and a little more evening life, Piciu Piciu Club and Coast End are about 2.4 miles away.

The setting is surrounded by lush vegetation, with Ukunda Airport about 3.6 miles away by road. Moi International Airport is considerably farther, at around 30 miles by road.

There is only one accommodation option, so choosing the right room does not require a spreadsheet. The Deluxe Suite occupies the second floor of the villa and is aimed mainly at couples, with enough living space to avoid turning every evening into a negotiation over who gets the chair. A sofa can become a bed for one additional guest, making it workable for a couple travelling with a child.

The bedroom has a king-size bed, an en-suite bathroom with a hot shower and toilet, and extra-long beds. The living room gives you a sofa, dining area, desk and a 50-inch flat-screen TV with Netflix, useful when the sea has won the argument and you are finished for the day. A refrigerator, minibar, microwave, kettle and water dispenser cover the small practicalities of staying somewhere warm.

Air conditioning and a fan help with the tropical heat, while the balcony or terrace opens towards the garden and the 15-metre pool. The outdoor seating gives you somewhere to dry off, cool down and review the day's diving without having to perform the review standing up. Daily housekeeping, free WiFi and a private bathroom keep the routine simple.

Breakfast is included, and it is the one meal built into the stay. You can have a continental breakfast or a full English/Irish version, with fresh pastries, pancakes, fruit and juice to put something useful back in the tank before heading out.

Hilda serves breakfast between 07:00 and 09:30, either in the living room or outside in the garden and shaded terrace. Breakfast in the room is also available, which is handy when an early start has made conversation an optional extra.

The swimming pool is available during the day, with a view over the garden. Beside it, a shaded gazebo has two sun loungers, comfortable cushions and fresh towels — exactly the sort of arrangement that makes a serious afternoon of doing very little entirely defensible.

The surrounding area gives you more to do when you are not at the beach or sitting down to eat. Hilda's Homestay can help organise marine outings, including boat trips and dolphin-watching, while nearby activities include snorkelling, cycling, hiking and a golf course within 2 miles. The coast is close enough for a change of scenery without turning a free afternoon into a transport project.

For a longer day away from the water, excursions include a Pilli Pipa dhow safari to Kisite Mpunguti National Marine Park, with guided snorkelling and a meal on Wasini Island. Land-based safaris can also be arranged to destinations including Shimba Hills, Tsavo East, the Maasai Mara and Amboseli.

Ukunda Airport is around 3.6 miles away by road, and an airport shuttle is available to arrange with the property. Private parking is available on site, with no reservation needed. Free WiFi runs throughout the property, with a stated speed of 19 Mbps for HD streaming and video calls.

Check-in runs from 13:00 to 19:00, and Hilda is available for help and requests until 19:00. Check-out is from 08:30 to 11:00. Private check-in and check-out, luggage storage and daily housekeeping keep the arrival and departure days manageable, particularly when flights and boat schedules refuse to cooperate.

Laundry and ironing services are available. The upper floors are reached by stairs only, and payment is by cash. Children of any age are welcome; cots and extra beds can be requested. Smoking, pets and parties are not allowed.
