Hotel Aguia Negra

You come here for the sea first, but the hotel gives you enough around it to make the rest of the day easy. Aguia Negra is a small oceanfront resort in Vilankulos, with a private beach area, a garden, a sun terrace and an infinity-style pool facing the coast. It has the feel of a place where you can trade a timetable for a chair, a cold drink and a view that does not need much explanation.

The hotel suits couples who want sea views and a little more room to spread out, as well as families using interconnected rooms. The larger accommodation options bring in separate living areas, kitchens and lounges, while the more straightforward rooms keep things practical. English is spoken by the hotel team, so you can sort out the useful details without relying on hand signals after a long day in the water.

There are 16 rooms in total. That gives Aguia Negra a more contained scale than a large resort, while the restaurant, pool and beach remain close at hand.

Rua De Outubro puts you on the seafront in Vilankulos, Mozambique, in the Bazaruto Archipelago. The beach is directly accessible from the property, with white sand, loungers, parasols and a beach bar. You do not need a vehicle to reach the shoreline; it is part of the address.

Vilankulos town centre is around ten minutes away, giving you access to the town without placing you in the middle of it. A few restaurants sit within roughly 0.1 to 0.4 miles, including Big Blue, Shelsio Complexo and Vilanculos Beach Lodge. Pantanal, a nearby bar, is around 2.5 miles away.

Vilankulo Airport is about 3.5 miles away by road, or roughly six minutes by car. The coast is the main event here: beach, lagoon and archipelago, with boat trips and island outings available in the surrounding area.

Room choice matters here because the range runs from sensible twin or double rooms to very large presidential accommodation. If you are travelling as a couple and want the sea to be part of the room rather than something glimpsed on the way to breakfast, choose a sea-view category. If you prefer a proper base for several days, the larger apartment and presidential options offer more space for sitting, storing bags and getting out of each other's way before the first coffee.

The Presidential Suite and Presidential King Room are aimed at the couple who likes room to manoeuvre, with the resort describing the presidential accommodation as including kitchen, dining and lounge areas. The Deluxe One-Bedroom Apartment also gives you a more residential arrangement. For families, interconnected rooms are available, and children of any age are welcome; cots and extra beds are not available, so the existing sleeping arrangements need checking carefully before booking.

Air conditioning is useful when you return warm and salty, while soundproofing and soundproof rooms should help keep the night from turning into an unexpected surface interval. Rooms also have private bathrooms, a wardrobe or cupboard, television with satellite and cable channels, a kettle and coffee machine. A mosquito net, fan and wake-up service cover the less glamorous but genuinely useful parts of a coastal stay.

Giney's Restaurant & Bar handles breakfast, lunch and dinner on an open-air terrace by the beach. The cooking is centred on seafood and international dishes, with African, British, Italian and Portuguese influences also represented. There is one named bar, Giney's Bar, positioned between the oceanfront and pool areas. It specialises in handcrafted cocktails and works as the place for a drink without abandoning the view. The restaurant also has an outdoor poolside setting, so you can move from water to table without turning the evening into an expedition.

The main pool is outdoors, with a bar area and views towards the lawns, beach and ocean. Add sun loungers, parasols and pool or beach towels, and you have the straightforward version of a recovery day: swim a little, lie down properly and let the tide do the entertainment. The private beach area gives you another place to stop, with sunrise over the Indian Ocean for anyone willing to be awake at the right time.

When sitting still has finally lost its appeal, the surrounding area offers kitesurfing, fishing, boat excursions and dhow safaris. Deep-sea fishing and helicopter exploration of the islands are also listed among the available outings. These are not activities to squeeze into a crowded afternoon; they are the sort of extras that can fill a non-diving day without making you spend it indoors.

On land, you can look at birdlife, join nature walks, take a cultural tour, go horse riding or visit places such as Bazaruto National Park and Santa Carolina Island. The hotel offers an airport shuttle between Vilankulo Airport and the property, and free private parking is available on site. By road, the route runs north from Maputo on the EN1 through Xai-Xai and Maxixe, then turns towards Vilanculos. From the turn-off, the tarred road continues for around 12 miles to Vilanculos; once in town, follow the signs to Aguia Negra. Children are welcome, pets can stay on request, and parties or events are not allowed.
