You stay in Utende, Tanzania, directly on the seafront. Mafia Island is reached by air from Dar es Salaam, with the flight to the island taking about 30 minutes; the journey from Zanzibar takes about 45 minutes. From Mafia Island Airport, the lodge is around a 20-minute drive. An airport shuttle can be arranged by the team, so you can organise the final leg before arrival rather than negotiating it after a flight.

The Rufiji Mafia Kilwa Marine Reserve is around 4 miles away by road. You are also close to the island’s natural and cultural excursions, with traditional villages, birdwatching and trips on the water all part of the wider choice.

The room choice is mainly about how much space and which outlook you want. Standard double and queen rooms keep things simple for two, while the deluxe rooms give you more room to spread out and include a sea-view option. The Family Room with Sea View is the practical choice when three of you are travelling together: it combines a super-king-size bed with a bunk bed, rather than asking someone to draw the short straw with a sofa. Twin beds are available in a standard twin room, although that category uses a shared bathroom. Check the room card carefully before booking, as bathroom arrangements vary between categories.

Air conditioning matters on an island, particularly when you return warm, salty and ready to collapse. Rooms also have balconies, a mosquito net, a fan and soundproofing, with garden, courtyard or sea views depending on the category.
