Fundu Lagoon

Set on Pemba's Wambaa Peninsula, this is a small lodge built around the useful pleasures of island life: sea air, open views, a private beach and somewhere decent to sit down when the day's activities are over. The design follows a barefoot safari-lodge approach, with the jungle and ocean doing most of the decorating. No need for a marching band; the setting has enough going on already.

The atmosphere suits couples and adults looking for an isolated stay rather than a resort with a timetable shouted through a loudspeaker. The property welcomes children aged 12 and over, while the accommodation includes family rooms. A private entrance, outdoor spaces and plenty of views keep the rooms connected to their surroundings without asking you to sleep under a tree.

When you want to slow the pace, there is a sun terrace, a beachfront setting, an infinity pool and a bar by the water. The lodge also offers a spa, organised island visits and outdoor experiences, so you can build a day around more than simply moving from bed to beach chair.

Fundu Lagoon is in Pemba, Tanzania, on the Wambaa Peninsula. The lodge sits directly on the sea, with a private white-sand beach, jungle and mangroves around it. This is an isolated coastal location rather than a base for wandering between cafés and shops; the appeal is the peninsula itself.

Wawi Airport is 9 miles away in a straight-line listing, with the road transfer covering about 13 miles and taking around 36 minutes before the boat connection. The practical route continues from the airport towards Mkoani, then crosses by private speedboat to the lodge. In total, the journey is roughly an hour by road followed by about 10 minutes on the water, with the boat crossing varying according to the tides.

The surroundings are made for looking outward. You have the beach, the ocean, the tropical vegetation and the jetty, while the tour desk can arrange visits beyond the property, including villages, spice plantations and Ngezi Forest.

The accommodation follows the lodge's safari-tent style, with private bathrooms, outdoor views and a private entrance. Sea-view rooms make the obvious choice if you want the Indian Ocean to be part of the first and last thing you see each day; garden-view accommodation gives you a more enclosed outlook among the vegetation. For a couple wanting more room to spread out, the Superior Suite is the practical step up rather than merely a different label.

Inside, the useful details are straightforward: a minibar for cold drinks, a fan for the warm hours, WiFi in the public areas and a mosquito net over the bed. That net is not decoration; in a tropical lodge, it earns its keep. Hardwood or parquet floors, linen, towels, bathrobes, toiletries, a hairdryer and a shower cover the everyday basics, while some accommodation is on the ground floor.

The smaller rooms work neatly for two, particularly if your priority is a sea view and a direct connection with the outdoors. The larger suite gives you more breathing space for a longer stay. Some suites also have private pools, adding a quieter option when you want water without walking any further than the door.

Full board keeps the day simple: breakfast, lunch and dinner are part of the stay, so you can stop thinking about where to eat and concentrate on whether the next drink should be taken by the pool or on the jetty. Breakfast is continental, with fresh pastries, cheese and fruit.

The evening menu brings more substance, with varied choices at each stage of the meal: three starters, three main courses and three desserts. Fresh seafood and island-inspired cooking feature in the hotel's dining style, with meals served in outdoor settings overlooking the beach. Beach dinners under the stars and barbecues on the sand give the evening a change of scenery without requiring a change of resort.

There are three bar settings: a beach bar, a pool bar and a sunset bar. Signature cocktails are the speciality, with aperitifs on the beach and a final drink at the jetty. Wine and champagne are also available, as are special-diet menus on request. The minibar in your room is useful for the quieter part of the evening, when the jetty has lost its last customer.

The infinity pool faces the wider view, while the private beach offers white sand, loungers and the simplest possible post-activity plan: find a chair and stay there. The sun terrace, garden, patio and outdoor seating give you several places to read, talk or stare at the water with professional concentration.

Fundu Spa adds the slower, more deliberate version of recovery. Massages, facials and holistic therapies are available, with local natural ingredients used in the treatments. There is also a relaxation area, beauty services, spa packages and a massage chair for anyone who prefers their unwinding with less conversation.

Away from the pool and spa, you can kayak through the mangroves or on the house reef, go fishing, join a dolphin safari or take a walking tour. The lodge can also arrange visits to villages, spice plantations, Ngezi Forest and the village of flying foxes. Henna and hair braiding offer a more local change of pace, while snorkelling trips include Misali Island and night snorkelling.

The transfer is part road journey and part boat journey. You are collected at Chake Chake Airport, travel by vehicle to Mkoani port, then continue by private boat to Fundu Lagoon. Airport transfers are available through the property and need arranging with the hotel. Arrivals after 17:00 cannot be accepted, so your flight timing matters more here than at a mainland hotel with a taxi rank outside.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 17:00 and check-out from 07:30 to 11:00. You need photo identification and a credit card at arrival, and the property needs your expected arrival time in advance. The minimum age for check-in is 18. A 24-hour front desk, luggage storage, daily housekeeping, laundry and a tour desk cover the useful logistics around a remote stay.

The lodge accepts children aged 12 and over, and cots and extra beds are not available. Pets are not allowed, and payment is by card rather than cash. Minimum stays vary by season: two nights during the main seasonal periods and five nights over the festive period. The property closes annually between seasons, including from 16 March to 30 June 2026 and from 15 April to 30 June 2027, so check the operating dates before building an itinerary around it.

The lodge follows a low-impact approach designed to fit into the natural setting rather than flatten it into a conventional resort. Local staff are employed, and the surrounding community receives reinvestment as part of the property's operating philosophy.

The quieter season also has a practical purpose: the marine ecosystems, coral reefs, forests and beaches benefit from periods of reduced activity. That gives the destination time to recover instead of treating every month as peak season.

Local experiences are presented through village visits and spice-farm visits, with the emphasis on learning about everyday life on Pemba rather than turning the island into a stage set. The approach is woven into the lodge's design and its links with the surrounding community.
