You are in Abraão, on Ilha Grande, Brazil, surrounded by Atlantic Forest rather than roads and car parks. Abraão Beach is about 250 metres away, or roughly a two-minute walk according to the walking route. That puts sand and seawater within easy reach without placing you directly on the beach.

The surrounding area is useful once you have changed out of your dive gear. Rapala is about 50 metres away, while Pizzaria Fornilha and Restaurante Canoas Ilha Grande are each about 100 metres from the pousada. Preta Beach is around 1.5 km away, Abraãozinho Beach about 1.5 km away, and Feiticeira Beach about 3 km away.

The island setting matters when you arrive. Resende Airport is about 49 miles away, Jacarepaguá Airport about 51 miles, and Ubatuba Airport about 60 miles, followed by the onward journey to Ilha Grande. An airport shuttle is available through the property.

The rooms are compact and sensibly equipped, with a private bathroom, wardrobe, fan, minibar and flat-screen television. Private balconies with forest views are available in the balcony rooms, giving you somewhere to sit with a drink while the rainforest does the talking. For two people, a Double Room with a balcony makes the most of the setting; the forest view gives the room a reason to exist beyond sleeping. The Double Room without a balcony is the simpler choice if your priority is keeping the booking uncomplicated. Travelling as three, the Triple Room or the ground-floor option gives you the extra sleeping arrangement shown on the room card without turning the room description into a small spreadsheet.

There is a fan in every room, and air conditioning is available in air-conditioned rooms. The minibar is handy for cold water when you come back from the sea, while the DVD player and library of more than 100 titles provide an old-school fallback for a quiet evening. Ilha Grande does not need a hotel to manufacture entertainment. From the pousada, you can reach Abraão Beach in about 250 metres and use the coast for a swim or snorkelling session, while walking tours and hiking give you a way to spend time ashore when the sea is not on the programme.

The garden and outdoor furniture are made for the slower part of the day: sit down, dry off and let your legs remember that they have been working. A picnic area adds another simple option, and the shared lounge or TV area gives you somewhere to retreat when the weather turns or your energy runs out.

Table tennis, a games room, board games and puzzles keep the non-diving hours occupied without pretending to be a resort activity schedule. The property also has an indoor play area and children's books, DVDs or music, although the accommodation policy does not allow children. A tour desk can help organise island activities, while the nearby beaches and Atlantic Forest provide the larger stage.

Check-in starts from midday and check-out is by 10:00. Private check-in and check-out are available, alongside luggage storage and lockers, which can make the first or last island day easier to manage. There is no parking at the property, so arriving by car is not part of the plan here.

An airport shuttle and a shuttle service are available through the pousada. The airport shuttle is an arranged service rather than something to assume will happen automatically, so organise it with the property before travelling.
