There are two bars. Bar Atlântico is the lobby bar, with cocktails and drinks for the civilised part of the evening; the Pool Bar keeps cocktails and snacks near the outdoor pool. Room service runs around the clock, handy when the day's final meal needs to happen horizontally.

The outdoor pool is the obvious place for a slow afternoon, with loungers, parasols and a bar in the pool area. It is not heated, so it will suit you better when the Atlantic air is doing its warm Madeira business rather than on a determinedly chilly day. There is also an indoor pool, plus a steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi and relaxation area.

SALA SPA offers massages and facials, while the fitness centre gives you somewhere to move without pretending that a corridor walk counts as training. The practical caveat is worth keeping in mind: the indoor pool requires a swimming cap, children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult there, and the hot tub, sauna and Turkish bath are for guests over 16.

When you are ready to leave the hotel, the programme can include hiking, cycling, boat excursions, kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkelling. Madeira excursions include Funchal, Pico do Arieiro and levada walks.
