Parede Do Sardinha, Madeira: wall diving on the escarpment

Parede Do Sardinha, also known as Cais do Sardinha, presents as a direct extension of the Ponta de São Lourenço coastal escarpment. What you're diving here is essentially the underwater face of that peninsula, a steep rock wall that defines the site. The top of the wall typically begins around 15 metres and continues its descent to a sandy bottom that levels out between 37 and 40 metres, creating a clear vertical profile for the dive.

The wall itself is marked by numerous cracks and distinctive rocky structures, offering varied topography as you make your descent. You'll find these features provide ample refuge and interesting swim-bys. While exploring the face, keep an eye out for black corals (Antipatharia), which are a notable feature here, clinging to the rock and contributing to the site's unique character as a sloping escarpment rather than a typical flat reef structure.

This location, being one of the more exposed wall dives along the Ponta de São Lourenço side of Madeira, feels different from the more sheltered bays nearby. The conditions are influenced by its position at the tip of the peninsula, meaning you'll experience a more dynamic environment. This exposure contributes to the potential for encounters with larger pelagics, moving along the wall's edge.

Visibility here generally ranges between 10 and 20 metres, offering clear views of the wall's features and any marine life that passes by. As you drift along, you may spot various rays, including eagle rays, navigating the deeper sections or gliding past the wall. Schools of green fish and kingfish (Scomberomorus cavalla) are also common sightings, moving along the escarpment with the current.
