Viva Shallow: Punta Cana's vibrant reef and historical artifacts

Viva Shallow presents a distinct profile as a vibrant coral reef system, located just minutes from the coast of Punta Cana. The site offers a gentle descent onto a diverse reef structure, characterized by a small, three-meter high wall that drops from the main reef plateau. This wall and the reef top create an intricate habitat, with numerous crevices and overhangs providing shelter for smaller marine life, making for an engaging and detailed exploration.

The dive begins close to the coast, quickly revealing an authentic living museum at a depth of around 5 meters. Here, old Spanish cannons are arranged on the sandy bottom, forming an artificial reef that has become a refuge for various species. These historical artifacts blend seamlessly with the natural environment, offering a unique foreground for observation and photography as you explore the initial sections of the site.

Following the reef wall, you can reach a maximum depth of 9 to 10 meters. A notable feature of Viva Shallow is its role as a nursery. The shallower reef top, particularly around 5 meters, is a prime location to observe juvenile marine animals. You can often spot baby boxfish and drum fish (Eques lanceolatus), which use these protected areas for growth before venturing into deeper waters. This aspect provides an insight into the life cycle of the local reef inhabitants.

Beyond the reef structure, the adjacent sandy bottom is an area to observe less common visitors. Rays are frequently seen gliding over the sand, and the occasional manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) has been known to frequent the area, drawn by the calmer conditions and potential feeding grounds.
