Jardin Malanga

A former Creole house from 1927, three cottages and a tropical garden give Jardin Malanga a character that does not come from matching furniture and a laminated slogan. You stay at the foot of La Soufrière, with views across the sea towards the Saintes Archipelago and an infinity pool for the unhurried part of the day.

This is a place for divers who want nature around the hotel rather than a resort built around a beach strip. You can swim, eat on the terrace, book a massage or simply sit outside with the garden doing what tropical gardens do best: growing enthusiastically in every direction. The website is available in English and French, which is useful when you are arranging the practical details of your stay.

Jardin Malanga is in Basse-Terre, at Trois-Rivières, in southern Guadeloupe. The setting is tied to the mountains, jungle and sea rather than to a town centre: La Soufrière is close by, and the property looks out towards the Saintes Archipelago.

You are not stepping straight from the room onto a beach. Salee-Bananier Beach is about 3.6 miles away by car, while Grande Anse Beach is about 4.6 miles away. Several restaurants are also within reach by car, including Total Vegetal at about 2.1 miles and Le Fetou Kreyol and Chez Jacqueline at about 2.7 miles. Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport is around 50 minutes away by car.

Choose the Signature Suite when space matters more than keeping things compact. It accommodates up to four people and gives you room to spread out after a day with wet bags, clothes and the usual collection of things that somehow occupy half the room. For a couple, the Bungalow offers a more contained stay, with a private bathroom and its own 28-square-metre layout.

The Heritage Room works for a couple or a small group of up to three, with a king-size bed and a single bed. The Family Room is also designed for two, while children over eight are welcomed only in the suite and family cottage arrangements. That makes the room choice important if you are travelling with younger family members.

The practical side is properly covered: air conditioning for the return from hot, salty water, a refrigerator for keeping drinks cold, hardwood or parquet floors, linen, a wardrobe and, in some rooms, a dressing room. Private balconies are furnished and can open the view towards the sea, pool or mountains, while garden views are also available. Daily housekeeping, WiFi, a hairdryer and bathrobes round off the useful details rather than merely decorating the room description.

Le Panga is the hotel restaurant, set on a terrace beside the pool and facing the sea and the Saintes Archipelago. Breakfast is continental, with fresh fruit juice, pastries and tropical fruit, served from 07:30 to 09:30. It is a civilised start to the day, although an especially early dive departure may require planning rather than blind faith in breakfast timing.

Lunch runs as a tapas service from Monday to Friday, between 12:00 and 14:00. Dinner is a set menu of starter, main course and dessert, served from 19:00 to 19:30 and prepared by chef Emilien. The cooking combines Creole and French influences, using local and seasonal produce, with the menu adjusted to what is fresh in the markets.

Dinner needs to be reserved, and the table d'hôtes is closed on Wednesday evenings. A bar is also available at the property. Special-diet menus can be requested, and children's meals are available, giving you a little flexibility when the group does not all emerge from the water with the same appetite.

The infinity pool is the obvious place to reset. Sun loungers, parasols and pool or beach towels are available, with the pool positioned for views across the sea and towards the Saintes. After a dive, this is the sort of afternoon plan that requires no equipment, no timetable and no heroic commitment. A sun terrace and garden provide further places to sit when you have had enough of the water for one day.

For a slower form of recovery, the hotel offers full-body massages. You can have one beside the pool, on the terrace of your cottage or in the garden, which gives couples several ways to avoid turning relaxation into another organised appointment. Yoga classes last one hour, welcome beginners and more experienced participants, and take place in the tropical garden.

The tour desk and concierge can help arrange excursions around Guadeloupe and its islands. Options include La Soufrière, the botanical garden, tropical waterfalls, forest adventure activities, hiking, canyoning and visits to Les Saintes, Marie-Galante and La Désirade. Boat excursions and coastal flights are also part of the programme, while canoeing, hiking, snorkelling and diving are available as off-site activities.

The hotel can arrange an airport shuttle, either privately or as a shared service, through reception. Car hire is available, and free private parking is provided on site, so hiring a car is the sensible way to reach the beaches, nearby restaurants and wider island excursions. The airport shuttle is the more straightforward option if you would rather leave the driving to somebody else.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to 20:00, and you need to tell the hotel your expected arrival time. A photo ID and credit card are required at check-in. Check-out is by 11:30. WiFi is free throughout the hotel, and concierge and tour-desk services are available for arranging outings and local plans.

Children over eight are accepted in the suite and family accommodation, with no extra beds available. Cots depend on the accommodation selected. Cash is accepted, and pets are not allowed. The property also has a shared lounge and TV area, board games and puzzles, air conditioning in the general areas, and a safety deposit box.
