The residence sits at Anse Latouche in Le Carbet, on the north-west coast of Martinique. It is on the seafront, on the hills above Le Carbet, with a direct view over the Caribbean and immediate access to a quiet black-sand beach across the road. The setting gives you both sea and mountain scenery without pretending they are the same thing: one is for cooling off, the other for looking up at while deciding whether another excursion is sensible.

Plage de Saint-Pierre is about 0.5 miles away, while Plage du Carbet is 1.5 miles away. For dinner, the restaurants 1643, LAbri Côtier and Antonio Beach are all within roughly 0.5 miles, with 1643 the closest. Café Bonjour is about 1.5 miles away, and the Maurice Moscou natural park is around 5 miles from the residence.

The mountain side of the island is close at hand. Morne Piquet, which rises to 1,160 metres, is about 6 miles away, while Cascade du Saut du Gendarme is around 8 miles away. This is a useful base if your non-diving companion prefers walking, scenery and local outings to a second aquatic appointment.

The Studio with Sea View is the obvious choice for a couple who want the room to work as a small base rather than merely somewhere to sleep. You have a double bed, a private bathroom with shower, a dining area and a kitchenette with a hob, microwave, refrigerator and kitchenware. That means cold water and something simple to eat are within reach when you return hungry, salty and not especially interested in a formal meal.

Air conditioning matters here. It gives you a way to cool down after a warm day outdoors and makes the evening easier when the Caribbean air has done its best to keep you awake. A wardrobe, flat-screen TV and free WiFi cover the less glamorous but useful parts of a stay, while the sea view and terrace keep the room connected to the setting rather than turning it into a box with a bed.

The layout suits a couple particularly well, with the kitchenette and dining area giving you the option of keeping meals simple. Children of any age are welcome, although cots and extra beds are not available, and children aged four or over are charged as adults. The rooms are non-smoking.

Breakfast is available on request rather than as a fixed hotel routine. Fresh pastries baked on site and fruit juice can be delivered to your room, which is a sensible arrangement if you prefer to take the morning slowly or need to leave at a particular time. There is also a coffee house on site for refreshments, plus packed lunches when a day out calls for something more practical than a restaurant stop.

The kitchenette gives you another useful option: a refrigerator, hob, microwave, kitchenware and dining table are all part of the accommodation. After a long day in the water, that can be more appealing than dressing properly and making conversation with strangers. A bottle of wine or champagne is also available for the room when the occasion calls for something slightly less functional.

For meals away from the residence, 1643 is roughly 0.1 miles away, LAbri Côtier about 0.3 miles, and Antonio Beach around 0.4 miles. The nearby options are close enough to make dinner a walk rather than a logistical exercise, while the in-room breakfast delivery keeps the first meal of the day on your timetable.

The infinity pool is the main piece of post-dive equipment here, although nobody will ask you to call it that. It overlooks the sea and comes with sun loungers and umbrellas, giving you somewhere to dry off, read a few pages and watch the light change over the Caribbean. The garden and spacious terrace add room to spread out when sitting by the pool has reached its natural limit.

The beach is immediately accessible across the road, with black sand and the sea directly in front of the residence. Snorkelling is available nearby, while walking tours, fishing, hiking and cultural excursions give you options on days when the sea can wait. The hotel setting also puts the mountain landscape within easy reach, with Morne Piquet and Cascade du Saut du Gendarme both close enough for a planned outing by car.

For a couple travelling together, the choice is pleasingly uncomplicated: pool, beach, a walk, a local excursion or a quiet afternoon on the terrace. There is no need to manufacture an activity every hour. Some days, the correct programme is a swim followed by a chair in the shade and a decision about dinner made much later than intended.

Martinique Aimé Césaire International Airport is about 25 miles away, with a drive of roughly 48 minutes. Free private parking is available on site and does not require a reservation, which is useful if you plan to explore the island by car.
