Primo Fratello Beangovona: Mitsio's rock with hidden life

Primo Fratello Beangovona is the closest of the four 'faraglioni' that characterize this part of the Mitsio archipelago. As you descend, you find a submerged extension of the rock, starting from a shallow reef at 5 metres and sloping down to a maximum recorded depth of 22 metres. This topography creates a diverse environment, ranging from sunlit coral gardens near the surface to more sheltered overhangs and crevices deeper down. The site is easily circumnavigated, allowing for a comprehensive exploration of its features without demanding excessive depth.

The reef structure itself is rich with various hard and soft corals, providing habitat for a range of smaller marine animals. Keep your eyes on the reef edges and under ledges. This is where you'll often encounter white-tip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus) resting during the day, tucked away from the main current. They are a consistent presence here, often visible even on shallower dives, bringing a sense of wildness to an otherwise calm reef system.

Beyond the larger residents, Primo Fratello Beangovona holds a surprising diversity of smaller, more camouflaged species. Look closely among the coral branches and in the sandy patches for the delicate movements of leaf fish, masters of disguise, their bodies mimicking decaying leaves. Anemones of various species and colours dot the reef, hosting their symbiotic inhabitants, often cleaner shrimp or clownfish. You can also spot the vibrant ribbon eels (Rhinomuraena quaesita) peeking from their holes, their striking colours contrasting with the reef.

Currents at Primo Fratello Beangovona can vary. While some days it's a gentle drift, you should be prepared for stronger conditions, especially around tidal changes, which can provide a dynamic element to the dive. The topography of the faraglione means there are always leeward sides offering some shelter, but understanding how the current moves through the site enhances your ability to navigate and observe marine life.
