Canopee Lodge

You come here for the combination of sea, forest and a small-scale lodge rather than a large resort routine. Canopee Lodge sits in the wooded heights of Nosy Komba, between 50 and 100 metres above sea level, with terraces looking towards Nosy Tanikely, Nosy Be and the mainland. The setting is quiet in the literal sense: the grounds are surrounded by nature, with no soundtrack required.

There are four bungalows, a restaurant, a bar in the middle of the grounds and a pool whose opening follows the rainfall. That makes the place particularly suited to you if your ideal evening involves a proper meal, a drink, a view and an early night rather than organised entertainment. The lodge also welcomes families, with family accommodation available, while couples can keep things simpler with a private terrace and a sea-facing outlook.

WiFi is available throughout the lodge, and the rooms combine air conditioning, a fan and a mosquito net. The air conditioning runs during the hottest part of the day rather than around the clock, so the fan and the surrounding shade remain part of the practical setup.

Your base is on Nosy Komba, Madagascar, in a raised position above the coast rather than directly on the sand. The reception is a three-minute walk from the seafront, so you can reach the water without turning the outing into an expedition, while the height gives you the wider view across the islands.

Ampangorinana Beach is about 1.7 miles away. The village of Ampangorina is one of the places you can visit, and the lodge also organises outings towards the Lokobe National Park, Nosy Mitsios, Nosy Faly and Nosy Iranja. Lokobe Reserve is about 4.3 miles away as the crow flies, although island travel is not a matter of simply following the shortest line on a map.

Fascene Airport is about 9 miles away in straight-line distance. In practice, your arrival involves a boat connection, with shared and private transfer options from Nosy Be, Ankify or Nosy Komba rather than a conventional hotel shuttle from an airport forecourt.

The accommodation is generous by small-lodge standards, with terraces or balconies that make the view part of your room rather than something reserved for the restaurant. A couple will probably want the sea-view option if the outlook matters most; a family suite makes more sense when you need separate sleeping space and room to spread out. The room cards below give the exact layouts, beds and capacities, so the useful question here is how the night works once you have closed the door.

Air conditioning helps during the hottest hours, while a ceiling fan gives you another way to keep the room moving at night. A mosquito net is fitted, and the private bathrooms include a shower, toilet and complimentary toiletries. An electric kettle is available for a quiet drink before breakfast or after a long day outside.

The terraces and balconies are built for the unhurried part of the day: sit down, look across the water and let the island do the talking. Family rooms are available, and children of any age are welcome. Cots and extra beds are not available, so you will want to choose the room layout carefully if you are travelling with younger family members.

Meals are centred on the Canopée Lodge Restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The kitchen works with local, fresh and seasonal ingredients, and the menu follows a set format rather than offering an endless restaurant-style list. Preparations are homemade, with the chef able to adapt dishes to your tastes or dietary requirements on request.

Breakfast is included and combines continental and buffet elements: seasonal fruit, yoghurt, muesli, homemade bread, French toast or crêpes, natural juice, coffee, tea, warm milk and hot chocolate. Eggs can be cooked to order. That is the sort of start that works before a boat trip: familiar enough to be easy, with enough substance to avoid negotiating with your stomach halfway through the morning.

Lunch and dinner are also served at the lodge, so you can eat on site instead of arranging another boat journey when you are tired. Lunch follows a main-course-and-dessert format, while dinner includes a starter, main course and dessert, with larger appetites catered for by the chef. Homemade ice creams and sorbets use fresh island fruit such as passion fruit, pineapple, lemon, mango and banana. One bar sits among the grounds, alongside an on-site coffee house.

The outdoor pool sits in the middle of the grounds and gives you an easy place to cool down without planning another outing. Its opening depends on rainfall: during the dry months, generally from September to November, it closes so that water is not wasted. Check the position before you promise yourself a pool afternoon; the calendar matters here.

For time on the water, the lodge offers snorkelling, kayaking and boat excursions. Nosy Tanikely is the headline outing for mask-and-snorkel time, with turtles part of the experience described for the site. Some room categories include snorkelling sets and kayak hire, so check the selected accommodation rather than assuming every room carries the same extras.

On land, you can walk in the hills, visit Ampangorina and its lemur park, or head towards Lokobe National Park. Further excursions reach Nosy Mitsios, Nosy Faly and Nosy Iranja. Back at the lodge, a games room, board games, the sun terrace and the garden cover the quieter gaps between meals. Massage treatments and a relaxation area are also available when your legs have had enough adventure for one day.

Arrival is by boat. You can use a shared shuttle leaving Hell-Ville at 11:30 and arriving at around 13:00, or arrange a private transfer from Nosy Be, Ankify or Nosy Komba through the lodge. An airport shuttle service is available. For a stay of three nights or more booked through the lodge website, a one-way transfer is included.

Check-in runs from 10:00 to 21:00, while check-out is from 05:00 to 10:00. Those early departure hours are worth keeping in mind when matching the lodge to your flight and boat connections. WiFi is free in the rooms and across the property. Laundry is available, as is babysitting or child care. Pets are welcome on request, and payment can be made in cash; the lodge also accepts Malagasy ariary or euros, with bank-transfer and card arrangements available through the property. Cancellation is possible until two days before arrival, with separate arrangements for last-minute changes and flexibility for weather, flight changes or health reasons.

The lodge closes its pool during the drier months, generally September to November, to preserve the available water resource. It is a small, practical measure, but one you will notice if a pool is central to your booking decision.

Drinking water and the water used to prepare food pass through reverse-osmosis and ultraviolet filtration. That treatment supports both the kitchen and the glass of water waiting for you when you return from the coast.
