Princesse Bora Lodge is a four-star lodge on Sainte-Marie Island, built around private villas, a pool, a spa and a beachfront setting. The lodge stands in Ravoraha, Madagascar, on Sainte-Marie Island off the country's north-eastern coast. It is beachfront, with a white sandy beach only steps away and a private beach area on site. Ile aux Nattes Beach is also within easy reach, at roughly 0.4 miles on foot.

Sainte Marie Airport is nearby, making the final transfer refreshingly short by island standards. Le Ravoraha restaurant is around 0.1 miles away, while other nearby dining options include Restaurant Lakana Hôtel at about 2.7 miles and Restaurant la Baleine at roughly 3.8 miles. Coco Bay is 19 miles away and Clipper Bay 28 miles away, so the lodge works as a base for staying put as readily as it does for exploring further afield.

The accommodation is arranged as private villas rather than standard hotel rooms. That gives the night a little more breathing space: wooden interiors, a terrace, outdoor furniture and a hammock waiting for the moment when sitting upright feels unnecessarily ambitious. Views vary between the lagoon, the beach and the garden, so choose according to what you want to see first thing rather than treating the categories as interchangeable.

For two people, the Charming Villa keeps things straightforward, with a king-size bed and a private bathroom. The Deluxe Villa offers more room to spread out, while the Executive Villa is the natural choice when space matters more than keeping the booking simple. The villas include air conditioning, a mosquito net, a wardrobe and a private bathroom with a shower, towels, toiletries, a hairdryer and a bidet.

A terrace is useful here for more than photographs. It gives you somewhere to sit with a drink, let the day come down a notch and keep the sand outside the main living space. Free Wi-Fi is available in some rooms and in the public areas, though the accommodation is better suited to switching off than to running a remote office.

The restaurant sits beside the swimming pool, with a terrace where local food is served. It is the sort of arrangement that avoids the great post-dive question of where to go next: the table is already part of the same small circuit as the water and the room.

There is one bar, overlooking the lagoon, plus a wine cellar with wines from several continents. A snack bar and minibar cover the less ceremonial moments, while fruit, wine and champagne are also available. Special-diet menus can be requested, which is worth sorting out before hunger starts making the decisions.

The food-and-drink offer is deliberately easy to use rather than overcomplicated. There is a restaurant, a bar, poolside dining and snacks, but no stated board formula to build the whole stay around. That leaves you free to make the evening as simple or as sociable as the day deserves.

The outdoor pool is the obvious place to land when you want water without another timetable. Sun loungers, beach chairs, umbrellas, pool and beach towels, a garden and the private beach area give you several ways to do very little with reasonable conviction. The spa adds aromatic massages, spa facilities, wellness packages and a foot bath for a slower sort of recovery.

If sitting still becomes too ambitious, there are walking tours, cycling, canoeing, snorkelling, badminton and table tennis. Hiking and fishing are also available, as are on-site water-sports facilities. A games room, board games, evening entertainment and live sports broadcasts cover the hours when the weather, the legs or simple common sense suggest staying close to base.

The lodge also has a children's playground and babysitting or child services, so a couple travelling with family does not have to choose between activity and downtime. A shared lounge and TV area add another indoor option, although the terrace and the lagoon are likely to make a stronger argument.
