Set among coconut trees near Nilaveli, The Coastal Hotel keeps things straightforward: air-conditioned rooms, a garden, a private beach area and somewhere to sit with a drink or a plate of seafood. It is a small hotel with 14 rooms, suited to divers who want the coast close at hand rather than a large resort with a timetable for everything.

The mood is particularly easy to picture for a couple. You can step out towards the beach, return to a shaded terrace, and let the day slow down without having to organise an expedition across the property. An English-language website makes the basic arrangements easier to check before you travel; the listed hotel languages do not include a staff language.

You are in Nilaveli, within Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, at Ward 2 on Pulmoddai Road. The white-sand beach is about 0.03 miles away, or roughly a one- to two-minute walk, and the hotel also has a private beach area. That is the useful geographical fact here: your room is not merely in a coastal district; the shore is part of the daily routine.

The setting is a coconut estate, with the garden and beach doing most of the scenery work. Pigeon Island National Park is around 3 miles away, while Trincomalee town is about 9 miles away. Koneswaram Temple is around 10 miles away, so you can combine sea time with a cultural outing without pretending that the hotel sits in the middle of town.

For food beyond the hotel, several seafood restaurants are around 1 mile away. Trincomalee Railway Station is about 7 miles away, and China Bay Airport is roughly 10 miles away by the stated hotel location.

The room choice is deliberately simple. The Deluxe Double Room is set up for two people, with a double bed, air conditioning, a private bathroom and a balcony looking onto the garden. The room is compact, so it suits a couple travelling light better than three adults or anyone expecting to spread a full expedition's worth of luggage across the floor.

The balcony gives you somewhere to sit outside without turning the bedroom into a drying room, while the garden view keeps the outlook green rather than urban. Air conditioning matters in this part of the world: it gives you a cooler place to recover when the day has involved heat, salt and rather more effort than the photographs on a dive centre website usually admit.

The bathroom includes a shower, bidet, towels and toiletries. Rooms are non-smoking, and room service is available when the most ambitious evening plan is getting back from the beach, ordering something in and making it to the balcony before dinner goes cold.

The main dining address is The Ministry of Prawns and Seafood, a two-storey restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner on its terrace. The kitchen centres on fresh seafood, with prawns and crab curries alongside fish, chicken and vegetables. It is the sort of menu that makes sense in Nilaveli: local flavours, substantial plates and no need to dress up a fish as something it is not.

The building uses antique details and teak furniture, with an upper floor shaded by a neem tree and cooled by the sea breeze. There is also a shaded backyard dining area, giving you more than one place to sit when you have returned hungry and sun-warmed from the coast. Buffet service is available.

There is one bar, upstairs in a more private area away from the normal flow of guests. Cocktails are available, along with local and imported spirits, coffee and tea. An Asian breakfast with local specialities, juice and fruit is available, but the hotel's stated dining formula does not include breakfast, so treat it as an arrangement to check when selecting your stay rather than assuming it is bundled in.

The beach is the main off-duty activity, and it is close enough to use without turning a short swim into a logistical exercise. The private beach area, garden and spacious terrace give you places to sit between the sea and dinner, while outdoor furniture makes the simple plan entirely workable: shade, a book, and no timetable worth defending.

Kayaking can be arranged, as can other water sports and boat excursions. That gives you an option for a non-diving day that still belongs on the water, without filling the hotel with a programme of compulsory entertainment. You can also arrange cultural, nature and wildlife, religious, sailing and water-tour excursions, or private sightseeing.

For a day away from the beach, Pigeon Island National Park is around 3 miles away. Trincomalee's Fort Frederick and the Maritime and Naval History Museum are each about 8 miles away, making the hotel a useful base for mixing a little history into a week otherwise dominated by salt water.

China Bay Airport is about 10 miles away, and the hotel offers an airport shuttle that you can arrange with the property. Car hire is also available. If you are driving, private parking is free on site, with a reservation needed; that is worth sorting before arrival rather than assuming a space will materialise beside the coconut trees.

Check-in runs from 2pm to 3pm, while check-out is from 10am to 11am. The front desk operates around the clock, which is useful when travel plans refuse to respect daylight. Room service, lockers and a shared lounge with TV are also available, and laundry is offered as a paid service.
