Divinguru Nilaveli

Located in Nilaveli, just a short distance from Trincomalee, Divinguru has been a fixture of the Sri Lankan diving scene since 1999. The centre operates on the east coast, providing access to some of the most diverse marine environments in the region, from shallow coral gardens to deeper rocky formations.

Whether you are looking to complete your first Open Water Diver qualification or are an experienced professional pursuing your Divemaster or Instructor certification, the centre is equipped to handle all levels. The proximity to Pigeon Island National Park and the local wreck sites makes this an ideal base for both recreational explorers and those on a training programme.

The centre is a PADI 5 Star IDC facility, meaning it is authorised to conduct professional-level training including the Instructor Development Course. The team is composed of local and international staff, ensuring a high standard of instruction and a professional atmosphere on site.

Communication is made easy for international divers, as the team speaks a wide range of languages including English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Czech, Hungarian, Tamil, and Sinhala. This multilingual support is particularly useful for those undergoing intensive professional courses.

Safety and personal attention are central to the operation, with a strict policy of limiting groups to a maximum of five divers per guide. This ensures that every diver in your buddy pair receives the necessary support, whether you are navigating a reef flat or exploring a wreck.

The course catalogue is extensive, covering the entire PADI spectrum. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or the Scuba Diver course, progressing through Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, and Rescue Diver.

For those looking to specialise, the centre offers a variety of PADI specialty courses including Nitrox, Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, Night Diver, and Peak Performance Buoyancy. There are also environmental specialties such as AWARE Coral Reef Conservation and AWARE Dive Against Debris.

Professional divers can utilise the IDC facilities to pursue Divemaster or Instructor certifications. Additionally, the centre is a specialist in Freediving, being the first PADI Freediving centre in Sri Lanka, offering courses from Basic Freediver through to advanced levels.

The centre operates a fleet of seven boats, all powered by 40 hp Yamaha motors to ensure reliable transit to the dive sites. These vessels are designed to carry up to 7 people, maintaining the small-group feel that defines the Divinguru experience.

For those looking to extend their time underwater, night diving is a regular part of the schedule. The boats provide access to various sites around Nilaveli and Trincomalee, including the shallow reefs of Pigeon Island and the deeper sites further south.

Full rental kit is available on-site for divers who do not wish to carry their own equipment. This includes everything required for a complete dive setup, allowing you to travel light to the centre.

For divers looking to extend their bottom time, Nitrox is available. The centre also provides on-site accommodation and the Divinguru Beach Restaurant, making it easy to manage your logistics without leaving the Nilaveli area.

The reefs are teeming with life, from large pelagics to colourful reef fish. You will regularly encounter Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), jacks, and various species of angelfish (Pomacanthidae). The sandy areas and rocky ledges are home to Southern stingray (Hypanus americanus), eagle rays, and various species of moray eel (Muraenidae).

Macro life is abundant for those who keep a close eye on the details. Look out for nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), octopus (Octopus vulgaris), cuttlefish, and various species of shrimp and small crustaceans among the coral.

Seasonal highlights include the chance to see whale sharks, which occur occasionally in the Nilaveli and Trincomalee areas. Between March and September, the waters around Trincomalee may also host sperm whales, blue whales, fin whales, and pilot whales.

Diving in this region is generally characterised by easy conditions, making it suitable for a wide range of experience levels. The seasonal window for the best diving is from March to October.

While currents are generally manageable, the depth and topography of the sites vary, from shallow reef flats to deeper offshore locations. The visibility can range from 5 to 20 metres depending on the conditions.
