Hotel Lafayette

Set on the seafront outside Giovinazzo, Hotel Lafayette is built around the parts of a holiday that require little explanation: a private beach, swimming pools, a garden, a restaurant and somewhere to sit with a drink. The hotel has 20 rooms and a distinctly coastal, family-friendly layout, with enough on site to keep a mixed-age group occupied without turning every small decision into a logistical exercise.

English is available on the hotel's website, alongside Italian, which helps when you are planning the stay. The property also has a lift, accessible upper floors, private parking and a 24-hour reception. It is a practical base for a few quiet days by the Adriatic, particularly if your idea of luxury is getting back to the room without having to cross town in wet sandals.

The evening changes the pace. Summer brings live music, romantic dinners close to the beach and dance evenings, so the atmosphere is not purely about early nights and empty corridors. You can keep things simple during the day, then make a proper evening of it when the sun has gone down.

The hotel is in Giovinazzo, in Puglia, directly on the coast and outside the town centre. The private beach is reached directly from the property, while the surrounding area gives you the wider Adriatic setting rather than a resort sealed off from its region. Bari is the nearest major city, but the address itself belongs to Giovinazzo.

L'Arena Beach is about 900 feet away, and Gavetone Beach is also close by. Piramidi Beach is roughly 0.6 miles away; La Torretta Beach is about 1.5 miles away. That gives you several named stretches of coast nearby, although the hotel's own seafront position is the obvious starting point.

Giovinazzo railway station is about 1.3 miles away, with Molfetta station roughly 2.6 miles from the hotel. For meals away from the property, Torre Gavetone is around half a mile away and Ristorante Adriatico about 0.7 miles away. The historic Chiesa del Crocifisso is roughly 0.8 miles away, while Palazzo Ducale is about 1.4 miles away.

The room choice is mainly about how much space and outdoor access you want. A Standard Double Room keeps things straightforward for two people, while a Standard Triple Room gives a small group a separate single bed rather than asking everyone to negotiate one large mattress. The Quadruple Room with Balcony is the sensible family option when four people need to share without pretending that luggage does not exist.

For a couple, the balcony and patio rooms add an outdoor area to the room itself. If the view matters more than the extra breathing space, the Deluxe Double Room with Sea View is the one to look at. It is also the clearest choice for waking up to the coast rather than to a wall, a car park or somebody else's holiday laundry.

All rooms have air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, a minibar, a kettle with tea and coffee facilities, a flat-screen television, a desk and a private bathroom with shower or bath, bidet, towels and hairdryer. The autonomous air conditioning is useful when the Puglian heat has followed you indoors. Some rooms face the sea, while the balcony and patio categories give you an easier place to sit without heading straight back to the pool. The rooms are soberly furnished rather than built around decorative theatre. That is no bad thing when the main requirement is a cool, clean place to sleep, charge your phone and find your clothes again.

The on-site restaurant, Ristorante Hotel Lafayette, is reserved for hotel guests. Breakfast is continental and buffet-style, giving you the usual advantage of being able to choose between a proper start and the minimum required to become civilised. Breakfast can also be served in the room.

The restaurant has a terrace with panoramic sea views, so the setting does some of the work before the first plate arrives. In the evening, the complex combines food with live music, often beside the beach. That makes dinner more of an occasion than a quick refuelling stop, particularly when you have no intention of spending the night discussing dive logistics over another sandwich.

There is a bar, a snack bar and a coffee house on site. The gardens also have a bar, while the beach area has its own bar and food service. A minibar is available in the rooms, and wine or champagne can be ordered. Special-diet menus are available on request, and packed lunches can be arranged for days when you would rather stay out than return for a full meal.

There is no need to build the evening around finding a restaurant elsewhere. If you do want to go out, Torre Gavetone, Ristorante Adriatico and Apulia Food Restaurant at Lido Azzurro are all within the surrounding area.

Two outdoor pools divide the water time neatly: one is for adults and the other is designed for children. The private beach has sun loungers, parasols, a beach bar, food service and lifeguard assistance. It also has a beach pavilion. The practical caveat is important: beach access and the beach facilities are not included with the room stay, and the beach and pools are open to outside visitors as well as hotel guests.

Away from the water, you have gardens, a sun terrace and a small football pitch, along with volleyball, basketball and table tennis. Bicycle rental is available if you want to see more of the coast under your own power. The hotel also has a fitness centre for those who still have energy left after the day's main exercise. Some people call that discipline; others call it a warning sign.

Families get the larger share of the activity programme, with a playground built around a ship with slides and climbing features, children's outdoor play equipment, a dedicated children's pool and access to the sports facilities. Babysitting and children's meals are available. For adults, the more convincing reason to stay put is the evening programme: live music, dinners near the beach and seasonal dance evenings provide a clear end to the day without requiring a taxi into town.

Bari Karol Wojtyla Airport is about 6 miles from the hotel, and the drive takes around 15 minutes. An airport shuttle and a general shuttle service are available to arrange with the hotel. If you are driving, free private parking is available on site without advance reservation, which removes one small nuisance from the arrival plan.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to 23:00, and check-out is from 07:00 to 10:30. Reception is open around the clock, with concierge assistance, luggage storage and a safety deposit box at reception. The hotel has a lift, accessible upper floors and wheelchair-accessible units.
