Spiagge San Pietro is a resort for a stay built around the coast rather than a town centre. You have a private beach area, two outdoor pools, a garden and a restaurant on site, so the practical part of the day stays pleasingly simple: swim, eat, sit down, repeat.

The atmosphere suits couples particularly well, with rooms designed for two and a choice between garden-facing balconies, a pool junior suite and a suite with a hot tub. There is also a tennis court, live music and room to move between the beach, the pools and the dining terrace without turning the evening into an expedition.

For a diver, the appeal is straightforward. You can spend the morning at sea, return to a resort with food and drinks on hand, and leave the car parked while you make use of the beach, the pools or the bar.

You are in Castiadas, on the south-eastern coast of Sardinia, with the resort directly beside its private sandy beach. Cala Sinzias is about 300 metres away, while Cala Monte Turno is roughly half a mile away on foot. Spiaggia di SaMi is about 1.2 miles away by foot, and Spiaggia di Sant'Elmo about 1.4 miles.

The setting is coastal and fairly self-contained, but you are not cut off from places to eat. Maklas is about 0.2 miles away, Araxi e Mari – Ristorante Tipico is around 0.7 miles away, and Trattoria Pizzeria da Gianni is roughly 1.2 miles away. Sassofono Blu Costa Rei is about 3.8 miles away by road for a drink beyond the resort.

If you want a change from the beach, Monte Minniminni rises to 725 metres and is about 7 miles away by road. Cagliari Elmas Airport is around 36 miles away by road, with a drive of about 55 minutes.

Every room has a balcony overlooking the garden, which gives you somewhere to sit with a drink while the kit bag dries out in your thoughts rather than taking over the room. A desk and flat-screen TV cover the basics, while air conditioning should help when Sardinian heat has followed you back from the water. Daily housekeeping is included.

For a couple who simply want a comfortable base, the Classic Balcony Room, Double Room or Classic Garden Room keeps the choice uncomplicated, with a king-size bed in the standard double-room categories. The Deluxe Double Room follows the same two-person format. These are the rooms to choose when the balcony and garden outlook matter more than having a separate living area.

The Pool Junior Suite gives you more room to spread out, while the Suite with Hot Tub is the more obvious choice if the room itself is part of the evening plan. Every room has a private bathroom with a bidet. A cot can be requested for a child aged up to two, while extra beds are not available.

Breakfast starts the day with a continental, Italian and gluten-free selection. That gives you a useful spread before heading out, whether you want something recognisably Italian or simply need food that behaves itself before a morning on a boat.

Ristorante San Pietro handles lunch and dinner on its terrace, with Mediterranean cooking based on fresh, local produce. Vegetarian, vegan and dairy-free choices are available, and special-diet menus can be arranged. You can therefore keep the meal straightforward after diving rather than treating every dietary requirement as a separate negotiation.

There is one named bar, Bar San Pietro, serving cocktails, wine and soft drinks. A snack bar and an on-site coffee house fill the gaps between meals, while wine and champagne are also available. The resort also has a restaurant, so you can keep dinner on site when wet hair and post-dive appetite make a longer outing seem unnecessarily ambitious.

Two outdoor pools give you an alternative to the sea, with pool and beach towels available. On the sand, sun loungers and umbrellas are provided in the private beach area, so you can choose between a poolside afternoon and the more traditional Sardinian arrangement: chair, shade and very little urgency.

The resort also offers a tennis court and tennis equipment, canoeing and water-sports facilities on site. Bicycle rental and walking tours are available for exploring beyond the grounds, while live music provides a change of pace in the evening. For a quieter recovery, the wellness facilities include yoga, fitness and a range of massages, including back, neck, foot, head, hand and full-body treatments.

Beauty services cover facials, body treatments, manicures, pedicures and hair treatments. You can therefore make the non-diving day as active or as horizontal as you like, with the beach and garden doing most of the heavy lifting.

Cagliari Elmas Airport is the nearest airport, around 36 miles from the resort by road. An airport shuttle is available, and the resort also offers a shuttle service and car hire. Free private parking is available on site without advance reservation, which is useful if you are driving around the coast or collecting a hire car at the airport.

Check-in runs from 15:30 and check-out is by 10:30. You need photo identification and a credit card at check-in, and the resort asks you to share your expected arrival time. A 24-hour front desk, concierge service and luggage storage make the arrival and departure logistics easier to manage around flights.

Children of any age are welcome. Children aged three and over are treated as adults for the accommodation rules; a cot can be requested for children up to two, while extra beds are not available. The resort is non-smoking, and pets are not allowed.
