Spiro Sub Diving Center

Located in Marina di Campo on the southern side of Elba, Spiro Sub Diving Center has been a fixture of the local diving community since 1974. This family-run establishment combines over five decades of experience with a professional PADI Dive Center affiliation, serving both local divers and those visiting the island via ferry.

The centre is positioned just 150 metres from the sandy beach of Marina di Campo, making it easily accessible from nearby campsites, hotels, and apartments. Whether you are looking to start your training or are an experienced diver seeking out the protected reefs of the Tuscan archipelago, the centre provides a structured and professional environment.

The centre operates with a focus on small group sizes, ensuring that guided dives never exceed six divers per guide. This approach allows for a more personal experience, whether you are following a professional guide through a reef or a student working through a certification course.

As a multilingual centre, the team communicates in Italian, English, and German. This makes the school an easy point of contact for international divers looking to complete their training or join local excursions. The staff also assists with local logistics, including help with ferry bookings and finding nearby accommodation.

Spiro Sub Diving Center offers a comprehensive curriculum through both PADI and CMAS pathways. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diver or the Open Water Diver course, while more experienced divers can progress through Advanced, Rescue Diver, and Divemaster certifications.

Specialised training is also available, including Nitrox courses to help you manage your nitrogen loading more effectively. The school is well-equipped to handle the full spectrum of diver development, from your very first breath underwater to professional-level instruction.

The Marianna, a wooden dive boat, serves as the centre's primary vessel for offshore excursions. Having a compressor on board means that cylinder refills are handled efficiently during trips, reducing the need for heavy lifting and transport.

The boat is used for regular guided dives and weekly excursions to more distant sites, including the Pianosa marine reserve. These trips are organised for groups of at least eight divers, providing a reliable way to reach the best reefs in the area.

The shore-based facilities are designed for convenience, with a full range of equipment available for hire. You can rent complete kit sets or select specific items such as wetsuits, fins, and masks. For night dives, torches are available to ensure you can see the nocturnal life clearly.

For those who prefer to use their own cylinders, the centre provides 10, 12, and 15-litre options equipped with both DIN and INT valves. Nitrox is available on-site, allowing you to extend your bottom time on many of the local sites.

The marine life around Elba is diverse, particularly within the protected zones. You will regularly encounter groupers (Epinephelus), Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), and various species of dentex. The reefs are often home to amberjack (Seriola) and larger predators that patrol the water column.

In the rocky crevices and under ledges, you can find a variety of smaller inhabitants. Look for scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), moray eels (Muraenidae), and different types of eels (Anguilliformes). Spiny lobster (Palinuridae) and large lobsters (Homaridae) are also part of the local fauna.

The seabed is beautifully decorated with red gorgonians, sea fans (Gorgoniidae), and various yellow sponges. These fixed organisms provide the essential structure for the reef, creating a complex habitat for spider crabs and other crustaceans.

Diving in this region is subject to local currents and sea conditions, which the guides monitor closely. The centre offers a variety of dive types, including night dives and boat-based excursions, to suit different environmental conditions.

While many sites are accessible from the shore, such as Capo Sant Andrea, the boat trips to Pianosa allow you to reach more stable environments further offshore.
