Hotel Cala Lunga sits among Mediterranean vegetation, with a private beach, an outdoor pool and a furnished terrace giving you several ways to slow the pace without turning the place into a theme park.

The hotel suits you if your ideal evening involves a shower, a drink, a proper meal and the sound of the sea rather than a busy resort strip. The setting is coastal and fairly self-contained, surrounded by cliffs and Mediterranean vegetation. La Maddalena town is about 3 miles away, around a 10-minute drive, which puts restaurants, cafés and town life within reach while keeping them out of your immediate view.

The wider area gives you several easy reasons to leave the hotel. The Maddalena Archipelago National Park is about 5 miles away, Caprera is 7 miles away, and other beaches include Spiaggia Punta Lunga at about 1 mile and Spiaggia del Cardellino at about 1 mile. A car is useful here: public transport does not serve the property.

The room choice is mainly about how much space and outlook you want when you return from the water. For two, the Double Room with Sea View keeps things straightforward, with a super-king-size bed and the sea doing its bit outside. The Junior Suite gives you more room to spread out, while the Family Junior Suite is the sensible option when three or four people need somewhere to put themselves and their bags without playing hotel-room Tetris.

Several categories bring a private balcony or a partial sea view, while the Standard Double Room comes with access to the piazzetta. That makes the choice less about grand labels and more about what matters to you: a clearer view, more internal space, or an easier connection with the shared outdoor areas. Family rooms and triple rooms also make the property workable when the trip includes more than two people.

All rooms are air-conditioned and decorated in a Sardinian style. You also have a flat-screen TV, minibar, wardrobe, private bathroom, shower, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer. Soundproof rooms are available, which is useful when your body is ready for sleep but the rest of the world has not yet received the memo. The dress code is casual, which is welcome after a day spent in equipment rather than smart clothes.

The dining offer also includes the à la carte Il Mirto for lunch and dinner, alongside a fixed dinner menu at Le Terrazze. The hotel has three restaurants in its wider offer, plus the Cormorano pool bar, a snack bar and the Sunset Bar. The latter specialises in cocktails and faces the sunset over the La Maddalena archipelago. Half-board is available; drinks are not included with that formula. Room service runs on limited hours.

The outdoor pool is the obvious place for a non-diving swim, with sun loungers and umbrellas around it. The private beach gives you a second option, this time with golden sand under your feet and the beach bar close enough to make staying put a perfectly respectable plan.

If you want to get back on the water without putting on a cylinder, kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, snorkelling and boat excursions are available. Equipment hire is available too. Boat trips to Spargi and Budelli make a practical day out of the archipelago, while a guided tour of La Maddalena town gives you something to look at that does not involve a mask or a depth gauge.

On land, you can choose cycling, walking tours, hiking, horse riding or fishing. There is a games room for a quieter diversion, and live music and themed evenings are arranged several times a week. For family trips, babysitting, an indoor play area and children's meals are available.

Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport is about 34 miles away, with a drive of roughly 45 minutes. An airport shuttle is available through the hotel, and car hire can be arranged. Free private parking is available on site, which is worth having in this part of Sardinia; the hotel is not served by public transport, so bringing or arranging a vehicle will make the surrounding beaches and town much easier to reach.

Check-in starts at 14:00 and check-out is by 12:00. Give reception your expected arrival time, particularly if you are arriving later in the day. The front desk is open around the clock, with concierge service, a tour desk and luggage storage available when your travel timetable refuses to behave neatly.
