You have a 3,000-square-metre garden, an outdoor swimming pool and a private golden-sand beach reached directly from the hotel. That is a useful combination when the main plan is to spend time by the water, not in a conference room.

The atmosphere suits couples, families and anyone who prefers a hotel with several ways to slow the day down. Children are welcome, with their own area, a children's menu and babysitting available. The hotel is in Santa Cesarea Terme, on the coast of Salento in Italy. Spiaggia di Porto Miggiano is about 1.5 miles away, while Castro Marina Beach and Porto Badisco Beach are each roughly 3 miles from the hotel.

You are also within reach of several places worth leaving the sun lounger for. Otranto is 10 miles away, with Castello di Otranto around 9 miles from the hotel, while Castello Medievale is about 3.5 miles away. Lecce can be reached by car in 40 minutes, and the nearest listed railway stations are at Poggiardo, about 5 miles away, and Spongano, about 6 miles away.

The address works best if you want the coast first and sightseeing second. A restaurant is about 0.5 miles away, and a café-bar is around 0.5 miles away, so you have a few alternatives nearby without being dropped into the middle of a busy town.

The rooms are bright, air-conditioned and finished with tiled floors and modern styling. Every room has a private bathroom, a flat-screen television, a wardrobe, a clothes rack and a mini fridge. The latter is not glamorous, but cold water after a hot day by the coast rarely needs to be glamorous.

For two, the Comfort Double Room with Balcony is the obvious choice if outdoor space matters; it gives you somewhere to sit without turning the bed into the only available chair. Couples who simply want a king-size bed can also look at the double-room options. For three or four guests, the larger quadruple rooms and apartments make more practical sense, particularly when everyone needs a little room to move around rather than taking turns with the luggage.

Choose carefully if natural light and location within the building matter to you. The Economy Double Room and Economy Quadruple Room are in the semi-basement. The apartments have their own bathroom and suit guests who prefer that layout, while all rooms provide air conditioning for the hot Salento nights. Daily housekeeping is included, and the property has non-smoking rooms.

Ristorante Santa Lucia covers breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a terrace setting and views over the sea. The cooking is Mediterranean, based on fresh local produce, and the dress code is casual — sensible after a day when your most formal item of clothing was probably a rash vest. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available.

Breakfast is served as a buffet from 7.30, followed by lunch from 12.30 to 14.30 and dinner from 19.30 to 22.00. The stay can be taken on a half-board basis, which makes the evening meal easy to keep on site when you would rather not search for a restaurant with wet hair and a fading appetite.

There is one named bar: Bar Tropical, beside the pool. It specialises in cocktails, so the post-dive drink can happen without moving far from the water. Room service runs during limited periods, from 12.00 to 15.00 and from 19.00 to 22.00; there is no continuous snack service or late dinner.

The main pool is outdoors and has an integrated bar, with loungers, beach chairs, parasols and a solarium around it. An outdoor hot tub adds another option when you want warm water without committing to another swim. The pool is not heated, so it belongs more to the sunny part of the day than to the heroic early-morning dip.

The private beach gives you a second place to settle, with direct access from the hotel and the basic equipment already in place. Snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding are available for days when you want to stay on the water without booking another full excursion. Boat trips can also be arranged at reception, and equipment hire is available.

On land, you have a gym, cycling, hiking and cultural excursions. Trips can be arranged to Otranto, Lecce and Gallipoli, which gives couples a reason to leave the pool together rather than negotiating the matter from opposite sun loungers. Summer evenings bring live music, while families have a children's area, babysitting and a children's menu.

Brindisi–Salento Airport is about 56 miles away by road. An airport transfer is available as a paid service, and car hire can be arranged. Free private parking is available on site, with no reservation needed, which is useful in this part of Puglia if you plan to move between beaches, towns and dive centres rather than remain within walking distance.
