You stay in a 25-room hotel in Centola, at the heart of Palinuro, with the practical feel of a small base rather than a sprawling resort. English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside Italian, so the essentials do not get lost between hand signals and hopeful nods at reception.

The mood is straightforward and useful. There is a garden, a terrace, Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, a library and a restaurant on site. You can arrive with a dog, leave the car in the parking area, and ask the hotel to help organise excursions or tickets. Not glamorous for the sake of it; simply the sort of arrangement that lets you get on with your holiday.

The hotel is in Centola, at via Santa Maria 16 in Palinuro, in the Cilento area of Italy. It sits in a seaside setting, with the town centre around 4 km away and the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park within reach for walks and excursions.

The sea is about 300 metres away. A fine-sand beach comes with loungers, parasols, showers and a beach bar, while a hotel shuttle takes you there. That makes the beach a realistic part of the day rather than a line on a map that requires a small expedition.

Palinuro is well placed for outings by land and sea. The hotel can arrange excursions to the marine caves of Capo Palinuro and trips to Capri, while bicycles, hiking and boat excursions add a few ways to spend a non-diving day.

For two, the choice is mainly about what you want to see when you open the curtains.
