Porto Romano - The Marina Resort is made for a stay that mixes diving, sea air and a little Roman history without putting you in the middle of the city. You stay in a private marina, with garden views, an outdoor pool in season and the useful luxury of having somewhere to sit down properly after a day in the water.

English, French, Spanish and Italian are spoken at the 24-hour reception. That makes arrivals, airport arrangements and the small practical questions of a dive holiday considerably easier. Couples get the setting they usually want: a quieter base, a restaurant on site and a spa waiting when the wetsuit has done enough for one day.

You are in Fiumicino, Italy, rather than Rome itself, in the Porto Romano private marina. The beach is around 1.3 miles away at Lungomare della Salute Beach, while Focene Beach is about 1.7 miles away. This is a marina location, so you get boats and waterfront atmosphere rather than a hotel directly on a sandy beach.

Fiumicino Airport is about 2.1 miles away, and Rome is roughly a 30-minute drive. Ostia Antica Archaeological Site is around 2.6 miles from the resort, giving you a solid land-based option between dives or on a non-diving day. Restaurants are close by too, including Gina a Porto Romano at about 300 feet.

The room choice is mainly about how much space and bed width you want for two. The Classic Double is the straightforward couple's option, while the Twin Room gives you separate beds if sharing a room matters more than sharing a mattress. For a little more room to spread out, the Deluxe Double Room or one of the suites makes more sense, particularly when your bags have acquired the usual collection of chargers, masks and damp post-dive clothing.

All rooms are air-conditioned and include a flat-screen television, safe, tea and coffee-making facilities and a minibar. Most have a balcony, which gives you somewhere to take the evening air without turning the room into a storage locker. Soundproofing and soundproof rooms are available, a useful detail when your sleep schedule is dictated by tides, boats and the occasional over-optimistic early alarm.

Free bicycles let you explore beyond the marina at your own pace. For a cultural change of scenery, Ostia Antica is nearby by car, while the surrounding beaches and local restaurants give you a few easy alternatives to spending every non-diving hour beside the pool.

Fiumicino Airport is about 2.1 miles away, and an airport shuttle is available to arrange with the resort. Car hire is also available. If you are driving, private parking on site is free and does not require a reservation; an electric vehicle charging station is available too.

The 24-hour reception handles private check-in and check-out, concierge assistance and arrival arrangements. Check-in runs from 3 pm to 11 pm, with photo identification and a credit card required; you should tell the resort your expected arrival time. Check-out is by 11 am.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.
