The atmosphere is more seaside hotel than diving compound. You get a private route to the beach, an outdoor pool in season, a bar for the post-dive drink and a restaurant with views over the Mediterranean.

You are in Leuca, Italy, in the centre of Santa Maria di Leuca and directly on its seafront promenade. The hotel is about 50 metres from a sandy beach, reached through a private passageway, with sun loungers and parasols waiting on the other side. That is close enough to make a quick sea dip a realistic decision rather than an ambition made over breakfast.

Nineteenth-century villas surround the hotel, while the harbour is about a seven-minute walk away. For a change of scenery over coffee or dinner, Vineria Renna is roughly 0.1 miles away, and nearby restaurants include Dolores Mangiare sul Mare, Blanc Luxury Beach Club and Martinucci.

Brindisi Airport is about 56 miles away. The Gagliano-Leuca railway station is roughly 4 miles from the hotel, so an airport transfer or a hire car makes more sense than turning the arrival into a long-distance surface interval.

For two, a Standard Double Room keeps things straightforward: one large bed, air conditioning and a private bathroom, with most rooms also offering a balcony. If your priority is the view rather than extra floor space, the Double Room with Balcony and Sea View is the obvious choice. It is the room for opening the shutters in the morning and checking whether the coast has improved overnight — it usually has.

Travelling as a family or a small group calls for more careful selection. The Family Room with Sea View accommodates four in two large beds, while the triple and quadruple options give you separate single beds alongside a large bed. The room cards show the exact dimensions and occupancy, but the practical point is simple: the family choices give you considerably more room than the compact double and single-use categories.

The smaller economy rooms and the Small Single Room are better suited to a solo stay or to anyone treating the bedroom as a place to sleep between dives. Every room has a wardrobe, television and air conditioning, and the hotel provides daily housekeeping. Cots can be requested for babies up to one year old; extra beds are not available, so check the sleeping arrangement before booking if your group needs more than the stated beds.

Breakfast is included and served as a buffet, with both sweet and savoury choices. You can take it in the restaurant or on the terraces, with service from 07:00 to 10:00. That gives you a sensible start for a morning away from the hotel, although the published breakfast window is worth keeping in mind if your boat leaves at an especially ungodly hour.

Ristorante Terminal handles lunch and dinner on its terrace. The cooking is Mediterranean, built around fresh local ingredients and traditional Salento flavours given a modern treatment. Lunch is served from 12:30 to 14:30 and dinner from 19:30 to 22:00, with a casual dress code — nobody needs to bring a jacket for a plate of pasta after a day in the water.

There is one bar, the American Bar, a lobby bar focused on cocktails and an easy place to sit before dinner. Tastings can also be arranged around its well-stocked drinks selection, and cooking lessons offer a more hands-on way to spend an afternoon. Room service is available, and special-diet menus can be requested.

The outdoor pool gives you a second option when the beach is busy, with the ancient pine tree providing shade over the pool and sun terrace. The pool operates from May to September. You also have the private sandy beach, sun loungers and parasols, so a day of doing very little is perfectly workable here — an underrated skill in diving holidays.

For a gentler recovery day, the hotel has a wellness area with a relaxation lounge, spa facilities, a massage chair and beauty treatments. Massages, sauna, hammam and hot tub access are available as part of the wellness offering.
