Casa Gloria is an aparthotel for divers who would rather have a proper base than a standard room. The feel is practical and independent. Air conditioning helps when Sicily has spent the day turning your wetsuit into a portable sauna, while free WiFi keeps the useful things working. Private entrances, non-smoking accommodation and a detached building add to the sense that you are staying in your own place rather than borrowing a corner of a larger hotel.

You are in Castellammare del Golfo, on Sicily's north-west coast. The property has direct access to a golden sandy beach with sun loungers and parasols, while Cala Petrolo Beach is also within a walk of about 0.5 miles. That gives you a choice between staying close to the apartment or heading out for a change of shoreline.

The useful part of town is close enough to reach on foot. Restaurants such as Gustare Sicilia Gastronomia, Salumeria del Corso and Walidò are all around 0.1 miles away, and Quemado Bar e Caffe di Di Gregorio Rosario is roughly 0.1 miles from the property. Segesta's archaeological site is about 10 miles away by road, with Parco Suburbano San Francesco around 6 miles away. Falcone-Borsellino Airport is about 21 miles by road; Trapani Airport is about 32 miles.

The choice is really about how much living space you want around the diving routine. For a couple travelling light, the ground-floor apartment or the apartment with a balcony gives you a manageable base with a private bathroom, dining area and seating space. The balcony option adds an outdoor place to take the air and, where available in the apartment, look towards the sea.

The apartment with a terrace is the one to consider when four people are sharing, or when two divers prefer not to live entirely out of bags and dry sacks. Its larger layout and two bathrooms should make the practical choreography less awkward. There are also family rooms and interconnected rooms, which gives larger groups more flexibility without turning the recommendation into a catalogue of room names.

Inside, the useful details are well judged for a diving holiday: a refrigerator for cold water, a stovetop, oven, microwave, coffee machine, kettle and kitchenware. A dining table and sofa give you somewhere to eat or recover, while extra-long beds, wardrobes, air conditioning and tiled floors cover the less glamorous but important business of sleeping properly. Sea-view terraces and balconies are the feature to prioritise if the view matters more to you than being on the ground floor.

The hotel is set up for self-catering rather than hotel dining. The apartment kitchens include the equipment for a proper meal, not just the ceremonial kettle and one lonely glass: you have a stovetop, oven, microwave, refrigerator, kitchenware, dining table and coffee machine. That works well when you return hungry, tired and not remotely interested in waiting for a table.

If cooking is not part of your holiday plan, several restaurants are within about 0.1 miles. Gustare Sicilia Gastronomia di Galeoto Giuseppe, Salumeria del Corso and Walidò are all close enough for the decision to be made after the shower. A couple of bars are also nearby, including Quemado Bar e Caffe di Di Gregorio Rosario at roughly 0.1 miles and Boh il Pub nelle Scale at about 0.3 miles.

There is no breakfast or half-board detail to build the day around, so plan on using the kitchen or eating out. The trade-off is freedom: coffee when you want it, a late plate of food when the dive schedule runs long, and no need to dress for dinner unless you actually feel like it.

The beach is the main non-diving activity here, with direct access to golden sand, sun loungers and parasols. You can keep the afternoon uncomplicated: swim, sit in the shade, read a few pages and let the day's salt and effort drain away. Cala Petrolo Beach gives you another nearby option if you fancy walking out rather than staying put.

For a quieter evening, the terrace or balcony becomes the useful bit of the accommodation. Sea views give you something to look at without requiring an organised activity, and the private apartment layout lets you retreat indoors when the heat finally wins. Board games and puzzles are available for family time, while bicycle hire offers a way to explore on two wheels rather than adding another vehicle to the day.

The nearby archaeological site of Segesta is about 10 miles away by road, making it a realistic excursion between diving days. The surrounding area also includes Parco Suburbano San Francesco, around 6 miles away. This is a place for choosing your own pace, not for filling every hour with resort programming.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to 23:30, and you need to tell the property your expected arrival time in advance. Check-out is from 07:00 to 11:00, which gives early departures some useful room, although the dive schedule will still have the final word. There is no age requirement for check-in.

Falcone-Borsellino Airport is about 21 miles away by road, and an airport shuttle is available to arrange with the property. Bicycle hire is also available. For drivers, free public parking is possible nearby without a reservation, which is more useful than a grand promise of parking that turns out to involve a ten-minute walk and a small argument with a machine.

Luggage storage and lockers help if your arrival and departure do not line up neatly with the apartment. Smoking is not allowed, parties and events are not permitted, and quiet hours run from 23:00 to 06:00. Children of any age are welcome; children aged four and over are charged as adults, while cots and extra beds can be requested according to the accommodation option.
