The useful distinction here is not a long catalogue of room names; it is whether you want a compact base or room to spread out. Couples can keep things simple with the Classic Suite, Studio or a sea-view double room. The studio has a super-king-size bed, while the larger apartments make more sense when you are travelling with family or friends and want a kitchenette, living space and somewhere to put the day's belongings without creating an obstacle course.

For a group, the apartments with sea views or a terrace are the practical choices. The largest layouts accommodate up to eight people, while the other apartments sleep three to five, giving you more breathing room than a standard double room. The Deluxe Apartment has two bathrooms, a small but important detail when several divers are trying to get ready, shower and leave at roughly the same time.

Air conditioning is available in every apartment, and accommodation also includes heating, a wardrobe or cupboard, clothes racks and a drying rack for clothing. Soundproof rooms are available, which may help when your idea of bedtime follows the last dive rather than the village clock. A television is there for the evening, although the real luxury after a long day may simply be closing the door, cooling the room and doing absolutely nothing.

Breakfast is included, giving you a straightforward start before heading out for the day. The accommodation is arranged around self-catering rather than a hotel dining room: the apartments have fully equipped kitchenettes, grocery deliveries can be arranged and packed lunches are available. That combination suits divers who do not always want to eat at the same hour as everyone else.

The local table is strongly shaped by Marettimo's daily catch. Fresh fish, citrus, herbs and spices run through the island's cooking, with antipasti such as octopus salad, tuna fritters, fish carpaccio and mussel soup. Pasta may arrive with sea urchin, lobster, bottarga, swordfish, prawns or pistachios; grilled grouper, tuna, swordfish, squid and cuttlefish cover the more substantial side of the menu.

For an evening close to home, Onda Blu di C, Trattoria Il Veliero and La Cambusa Marettimo are all about 200 metres away. Finish with a cannolo, cassata, almond parfait, granita or handmade ice cream if the day's exertions have left room. They probably have; divers are remarkably committed to scientific research in this area.

When you are not in the water, Marettimo gives you more useful options than a row of identical loungers. Cycling and walking tours are available, and the island's mountain setting provides routes towards places such as Monte Falcone, Case Romane, Cala Troia and Castello di Punta Troia. Hiking can be arranged with or without a guide, so you can choose between local knowledge and the traditional holiday method of taking the wrong turning with confidence.

Boat excursions visit Marettimo's semi-submerged caves, including Grotta del Cammello, Grotta del Tuono, Grotta della Pipa, Grotta Bombarda, Grotta Perciata, Grotta del Presepe and Grotta degli Innamorati. Canoes, inflatable boats and motorboats are available for hire, while kayaking, sailing, fishing and snorkelling offer gentler ways to stay on the sea without putting a tank on your back.

Trapani-Birgi is the nearest airport; from there, allow around 15 minutes by public or private transport to reach Trapani port, then continue by hydrofoil, catamaran or passenger ship.
