Villa Rocce Bianche is an aparthotel-style villa for divers who like a little independence between outings. The accommodation combines the privacy of a detached property with the useful bits of a self-catering stay: air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchen in every unit, a private bathroom and outdoor space in the form of a terrace, balcony, patio or garden, depending on your accommodation.

That makes the place particularly practical when your day has been organised around boats, kit and ferry times rather than hotel timetables. You can make coffee without waiting for breakfast service, put together something simple when you return hungry, and retreat behind your own entrance rather than passing through a large hotel lobby in full post-dive condition. WiFi is available throughout and free to use.

The atmosphere is more villa than resort. A seasonal outdoor pool sits in the centre of the property, and the accommodation includes private pools as well as garden and pool views. There is also a sun terrace, outdoor furniture and a solarium, so your non-diving routine can be as ambitious as a lounger and a book.

You find the villa in Contrada Mulino a Vento, on Favignana in Italy. The sea is about 0.5 miles away on foot, with Calamoni Beach at roughly the same distance. Lido Burrone Beach is around 1 mile away, while Spiaggia Praia is about 0.7 miles away.

For a wider tour of the island, Cala Rossa is about 2.1 miles away by road and Cala Azzurra around 2.5 miles. The Area Marina Protetta Isole Egadi is approximately 0.7 miles away on foot, giving you a nearby point of reference for the protected waters around the islands.

You are not marooned for dinner. Walk On is around 900 feet away, Matri Mia about 0.7 miles, and La Playa roughly 1 mile. Trapani Airport is about 7 miles away, while Falcone-Borsellino Airport is around 44 miles away. The island may still require a little logistical choreography; at least the final base is easy to locate.

Choose an apartment if you want space to spread out and the option of preparing your own food. The apartment layouts accommodate up to four people, with the terrace apartment giving you the clearest reason to choose it: somewhere outside to sit without turning the bed into your only chair. The garden-view apartment offers a quieter visual rhythm, while the studio apartment suits a couple who would rather keep things compact and straightforward.

The double rooms are the simpler choice for two, with a king-size bed and views towards the pool. Their sizes vary, so check the individual room card carefully before booking if you dislike tight quarters or travel with more than a toothbrush and a mask box. The apartments have the advantage of a kitchen; the rooms do not carry that same self-catering appeal.

Every unit has air conditioning, a private bathroom, a private entrance and tiled or marble flooring. A mosquito net is also provided, which is a useful detail when the evening air is doing its best to attract visitors. Towels, a shower, a hairdryer, a bidet and a coffee machine cover the practical basics. Children of any age are welcome, but cots and extra beds are not available, so the existing sleeping arrangement matters when you book.

The central swimming pool measures 7 by 3 metres and is set into the local tufaceous stone. It is an outdoor, seasonal pool rather than an elaborate aquatic complex, which is precisely the point: a place to cool down, float for a while and stop discussing the next dive. Sun loungers, beach chairs, outdoor furniture, a sun terrace and a solarium give you several versions of the same respectable holiday activity — sitting down.

If your shoulders have had enough of carrying tanks and your neck is staging a formal protest, massage treatments cover the head, neck, back, hands, feet and whole body. Couples' massages are available too. There is also an open-air bath and a public bath, along with yoga classes for those who prefer to stretch before the stiffness sets in.

Away from the property, cycling and hiking are available, and bicycles can be hired. Bike tours, walking tours and local culture tours can also be arranged, while boat excursions offer a way to see more of Favignana without adding another day of diving. The island's beaches provide the simpler alternative: walk to the water, find a place to sit and let the Mediterranean handle the entertainment.

Arrival is handled between 15:00 and 21:00, and you need to tell the property when you expect to arrive. Departure is between 08:00 and 10:00, so an early start is built into the practical side of the stay. Private check-in and check-out are available, which is useful when your travel plans do not fit a conventional hotel reception routine.

An airport shuttle and a shuttle service are available to arrange with the property. Car hire is also available, and bicycle hire gives you another way to cover the island. Free private parking is available on site, with no reservation required. That is a useful detail if you are bringing a hire car across the island rather than relying entirely on your legs and the occasional taxi.

Grocery delivery is available for the apartments, where the kitchen and coffee machine make a late return less awkward. Daily housekeeping, laundry and ironing are available as additional services. Smoking is not allowed, parties are not permitted, and quiet hours run from 23:00 to 09:00. Pets are welcome. Payment is by cash.

The property takes a practical, building-led approach to its environmental work. It uses little or no plastic, natural cleaning products and organic marine products, while encouraging responsible water use and sorting waste. Glass doors help reduce energy use, and smart energy-management software is installed to monitor consumption.

The original structure has been renovated with respect for its existing character, and old furniture is reused rather than automatically replaced. Agreements with electric-bike rental services encourage lower-impact travel around the island, giving you an alternative to taking a car for every short journey.

Solar panels are being considered as a future step. The approach here is less about a grand sustainability slogan and more about the unglamorous details: what gets cleaned with, what gets thrown away, how energy is managed and whether an old building can keep its character while working harder.
