Hotel Minerva

Built in 1875, Hotel Minerva keeps its original elegant character while adding a brighter, more contemporary look. Vivid colours, several lounges and broad views over the Gulf of Sorrento give you places to sit without having to retreat straight to your room. That matters when the legs have had enough of fins, stairs and Italian pavements.

An English-speaking team is on hand, alongside Italian- and German-speaking staff. The hotel suits couples particularly well, but families are welcome too, with family rooms, babysitting and a children's menu available. You get a proper Sorrento base rather than a sealed-off resort: the town is close, the sea is in view, and the pool is there when you would rather not negotiate another set of steps.

You are in Sorrento, Italy, at Hotel Minerva's address on Via R. Filangieri, in the town centre and close to the seafront. The sea is about 50 metres away, while a sandy beach is reached on foot and has sun loungers and parasols. The hotel itself sits in a panoramic position above the Gulf, so this is a place for looking out over the water rather than stepping directly from the lobby into it.

Sorrento's centre is around a five-minute walk away. Piazza Tasso is about 0.8 miles on foot, Piazza Sant'Antonino about 0.9 miles, and Villa Comunale about 0.9 miles. Parco Ibsen is roughly 0.7 miles away, while the walk to Sorrento Circumvesuviana station is about 1.1 miles. You can also reach Punta Campanella, around 6 miles away by road, for a change of scenery beyond the town.

Most rooms have a sea view, but the choice affects how much of that view becomes part of your daily routine. For a couple who wants to open the door and look straight towards the Gulf, the classic double with balcony and sea view is the obvious pick. The standard attic room also gives you a sea view, though the sloping-roof setting makes it more of a compact base than a room for spreading out.

The double or twin rooms work for two divers travelling together, particularly if separate beds matter more than a balcony. The annex version offers the same practical twin-bed arrangement away from the main room categories. All rooms have private bathrooms, an electric kettle, a minibar, television, free WiFi and air conditioning. A hairdryer and complimentary toiletries are also provided.

Air conditioning operates from 16 June to 16 September, which is worth checking against your travel dates rather than assuming the controls will settle the matter. Room service exists but runs to limited hours. There is a lift, and non-smoking rooms are available, so the late return to your room need not involve much administrative planning.

Ristorante Minerva serves breakfast, lunch and dinner on its terrace, with Mediterranean cooking and views across the Bay of Naples. Breakfast is a buffet and is included in the standard formula. The morning service starts at 7:30, useful if your day begins early, although no special early breakfast arrangement is given here to build a dive schedule around.

Lunch runs from 12:30 to 14:30 and dinner from 19:30 to 22:00. In summer, dinner can be taken on the terrace by candlelight, with a casual dress code rather than a performance involving a jacket and a small internal struggle. Half-board is available, but drinks with the meal are not included.

There is one bar: the American Bar, a lobby bar centred on cocktails and other drinks. It gives you an easy place for the first post-dive drink without leaving the hotel, while Sorrento's cafés and restaurants remain within walking distance when you want to change the scenery. A minibar is also available in the room.

The outdoor swimming pool is the straightforward recovery option: a dip, a sun lounger and no timetable to obey. The pool is not heated, and the surrounding terrace also includes a solarium. A hot tub provides a warmer alternative when the pool feels more like a challenge than a treat.

For time away from the water, the hotel can help arrange boat excursions and equipment hire, while kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkelling are available. These are sensible choices for a day when you want to remain near the coast without committing to another full day underwater. Hiking and cycling add a land-based option, although Sorrento's slopes will make sure neither activity is mistaken for sitting down.

Cultural excursions can take you towards Pompeii, Capri and the Amalfi Coast. That gives couples plenty to do together when only one of you wants to dive, or when both of you have decided that a second day underwater would be excessive. The tour desk and concierge can help organise the outings.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to midnight, and check-out is from 11:00 to 12:00. The reception is open around the clock, with express check-in and check-out, luggage storage and a safety deposit box at reception. Early check-in and late check-out can be requested. There is no age requirement for checking in, and children of any age are welcome; cots and extra beds are not available.

Naples International Airport is about 30 miles away and roughly 30 minutes by car. An airport shuttle is available on request, and car hire can be arranged. Private parking is available on site, with valet parking, but parking is a paid service. The hotel also offers free WiFi throughout, laundry and dry-cleaning services, a tour desk, currency exchange, meeting rooms and a doctor on request.

Cash and major cards including Visa, Mastercard and American Express are accepted. The hotel can assist with arranging diving excursions to nearby diving centres, so you can organise the diving side of the trip without turning the hotel into a dive centre. The American Bar, restaurant and room service cover the basic return-to-base routine; room service, however, has limited hours.
