Residence Marina Salivoli is an aparthotel for divers who prefer a proper base rather than a room with just enough space for a suitcase. You get an apartment, a kitchenette and a living area, so the evening can run to your own timetable: a meal out, something simple prepared in-house, or a quiet drink while the light leaves the gulf.

English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside Italian, so you can deal with the useful things without turning every arrival into a game of charades. The residence suits couples, families and independent travellers, with 49 modern apartments and a setting that puts the sea, the marina and the Tuscan coast firmly into the daily picture.

There is a small sea-view pool, a garden and a terrace, but this is not trying to be a self-contained resort with a marching band around the sun loungers. Its appeal is more practical: direct access towards Calamoresca, self-catering space, private parking and enough nearby life to make an evening out easy.

You are in Piombino, on Tuscany's Costa degli Etruschi, at Loc. Falcone in the Salivoli area. The residence faces the sea and Elba Island, with direct access to Calamoresca Beach, a small cove of sand and stones set below the rocky coast. The sea is about 50 metres away, which is close enough to make a pre-dinner stroll feel like a sensible idea rather than an organised excursion.

Piombino's historic centre is about a five-minute drive away. For a meal beyond the residence, Al Borghetto is next door, while La Cambusa and Al Solito Posto Beach are within a short walk. Cava Beach and Spiaggia dei Frati are each roughly a mile away; Spiaggia Lunga is about 1.2 miles away, and Baratti Beach is about 3.9 miles away by the mapped distance.

The wider area gives you something to do on the days when the sea has other plans. The Promontorio Piombino-Monte Massoncello is about 2.2 miles away, the Etruscan museum at Populonia about 3.9 miles, and Piombino's old defensive landmarks sit around 1.5 miles from the residence. Piombino train station is about 1.7 miles away, while Piombino Marittima is about 2.8 miles away for connections towards the Tuscan Archipelago.

The useful distinction here is not between one hotel room and another, but between having an apartment and having to live out of a bag. Every apartment has air conditioning, a living area with seating, a dining table and an equipped kitchenette. There is also a washing machine, dishwasher, fridge, microwave, coffee machine and stovetop. For a diver, that means cold drinks can be waiting, breakfast need not depend on someone else's timetable, and wet beach clothes do not have to become part of the evening furniture.

Couples can keep things straightforward with a studio, including sea-view versions with a king-size bed, or choose a one-bedroom apartment when a little separation matters. The sea-front options put the view to work, while the larger two-bedroom apartments make more sense for families or groups who would rather share an apartment than divide themselves across separate rooms. The two-bedroom sea-front apartment accommodates up to six people; the one-bedroom sea-front option accommodates up to four.

Bathrooms are private and include a shower or bath, bidet, toiletries, towels and a hairdryer. Apartments also have a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, free WiFi, wardrobe space and a private entrance. Soundproofing is listed among the room features, and upper floors are reached by stairs only. Smoking is not permitted, and quiet hours run from 23:00 to 08:00, which should help if tomorrow starts with a boat to catch rather than a heroic lie-in.

Ristorante Il Vespero is inside the residence and works from a terrace overlooking Salivoli harbour. It serves Italian food across breakfast, lunch and dinner, with the view doing its part while you decide whether the day calls for a full meal or something less ambitious. For divers, the useful point is simple: the restaurant is on site, so dinner does not automatically require finding the car keys again.

The residence can arrange packages built around half board or full board through its collaboration with Il Vespero. That gives you a choice between apartment independence and a more structured stay, depending on how much cooking feels like a good idea once you are back on dry land.

A bar is available on site, and drinks and snacks can also be picked up from vending machines. There is no need to dress the arrangement up as fine dining theatre: this is an apartment residence with an Italian restaurant attached, a terrace over the harbour and enough flexibility to suit a week when some meals are out and others are not.

The small outdoor pool has a sea view and parasols for shade. It is the obvious place to spend the part of the afternoon when you have had enough saltwater, enough kit and enough people asking whether you saw anything interesting down there. In the evening, the pool area also works for an aperitif while the sun drops over the coast.

For a more active non-diving day, the residence can be a base for cycling and walking. City bikes are available to hire, and suggested outings include the Sterpaia Natural Park, Calamoresca and Punta Falcone, Baratti and Populonia, as well as routes through the medieval villages of Campiglia Marittima and Suvereto. There are also rides combined with visits to wineries and tastings at estates including Casadei, Grattamacco and Poggio Rosso.

You can also arrange visits to Elba, Populonia and the Gulf of Baratti, or simply follow the coast on foot. The residence has a fitness centre, fitness classes and personal training, while the garden and terrace offer less strenuous alternatives. Families have room to spread out in the apartments, and children of any age are welcome; cots and extra beds can be requested according to the accommodation selected.

Arriving by car is the straightforward option, and free private parking is available on site in a garage without advance reservation. Car hire is available, and the port of Piombino gives you access to the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. Marina di Campo Airport is about 33 miles away by road, while Pisa International Airport is roughly one hour and fifteen minutes by car.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to 18:00, and you need to tell the residence your expected arrival time in advance. Check-out is from 08:30 to 10:00. A refundable damage deposit is collected in cash on arrival and returned at check-out following a property inspection. Payment at the property can be made by cash or ATM card.

Free WiFi is available in the rooms and throughout the residence.
