Diving Fethiye: sheltered bays, walls and limestone caves

Fethiye is a mainland base for boat diving among sheltered bays, islands, rocky ground and limestone formations. The underwater character ranges from Aquarium Bay’s gentle slope, beginning at just two metres, to Afkule II’s wall and cave system, which drops towards and beyond 50 metres. It is a sensible choice for divers who want several relaxed diving days without giving up restaurants, boat trips, beaches and inland sightseeing for non-divers.

Most diving starts from the harbour, with short day-boat runs into the Gulf of Fethiye and around the peninsula and islands. The scenery underwater is Mediterranean rather than tropical: sand meets rock, shallow reefs form corridors, and limestone creates walls, overhangs and caves. Small Reef is a good example, with canyon-like passages between six and 25 metres. Aquarium Bay slopes gently from two to 25 metres, while Aquarium Reef stays within ten metres and suits a slower look at rocky ground and orange sponges. Current is generally light, though exposure and weather can make Afkule II more demanding, with mild to moderate flow possible. Visibility is often clear from May to October; some local site information puts it around 20 to 30 metres, but conditions are not uniform across the area. Expect repeated boat profiles rather than one continuous wall or drift route.

The rewarding part of Fethiye’s wildlife is often close to the rock. Octopus are regular from spring into autumn, and the same period offers good opportunities to find moray eel and grouper around rocky formations and sandy edges. Scorpionfish are present year-round, provided divers slow down enough to spot them against the bottom. Aquarium Reef is particularly suited to this patient style of diving: its shallow water, orange sponges and rocky structure leave time to search rather than simply cover ground. Loggerhead turtle sightings are occasional in the warmer months. The Mediterranean monk seal is a rare report rather than a realistic expectation, so it should be treated as a fortunate encounter, not a reason to choose Fethiye.

The most dependable diving window is May to October, with warm-weather conditions and generally clearer, calmer water. The measured pattern places the calmest sea from September to November, while rainfall is lowest from May to October. That makes September and October especially practical: the sea is settling, the weather remains suitable for boat diving, and the busiest summer holiday traffic has eased. May and June also work well, particularly for divers who prefer to avoid peak-season harbour activity. December through February is a poor fit for a planned diving holiday because winter weather is more variable. A 3mm to 5mm wetsuit covers the usual warm-water approach, with the final choice depending on personal comfort.

Fethiye works for all levels, provided the site is matched to the diver. Open Water divers can use the shallow, lightly current-swept terrain at Aquarium Bay, Aquarium Reef and Small Reef. Advanced certification is appropriate for Afkule II, where depth, wall diving, cave formations and changing exposure demand more than a straightforward reef tour. An Advanced qualification from PADI, SSI or BSAC is useful, while Nitrox can help with repeated day-boat profiles. Divers should not assume that a calm bay and a deep wall belong in the same experience bracket.

From London Heathrow, London Gatwick or Manchester, the practical route is to fly to Dalaman Airport and continue by road to Fethiye. The important constraint is not an island ferry or a domestic flight: Fethiye is the mainland gateway, and the diving begins after reaching the town’s harbour or local launch points. Once in Fethiye, accommodation in town keeps the final part simple. The dive centre or harbour is normally reached on foot, by taxi or by an arranged transfer. That town-based layout avoids moving luggage between islands and means the daily timetable is built around the boat’s harbour departure rather than a separate transfer connection.

Book the earliest boat departure that fits the plan. Morning runs are usually the least crowded and give the best chance of enjoying sheltered water before the day’s breeze makes outer routes less comfortable. When wind or chop is building, ask about sites protected by the bay and peninsula rather than insisting on the most exposed itinerary. Pack a light suit, but bring the equipment that matters to personal fit and comfort; local day boats are practical rather than resort-style equipment rooms. Do not arrive expecting a tropical coral-reef holiday or a liveaboard schedule: Fethiye is Mediterranean boat diving from a working harbour, with repeated relaxed profiles and scattered rocky sites. Keep one weather-flex day in the itinerary, especially if the trip is short. Peak holiday weeks bring more leisure boats, so September or October can make the same harbour routine feel less pressured. There is no obvious park-permit system shaping the normal recreational dive plan.

Four to seven days gives enough time for several boat days, a weather-flex day and time to use Fethiye as a holiday town rather than a dive-only base. Divers can alternate relaxed sites such as Aquarium Reef or Small Reef with deeper or more demanding terrain when conditions and experience allow. Non-divers have beaches, harbour and island boat trips, ancient-site sightseeing, coastal walks, paragliding and straightforward inland excursions. Staying centrally keeps the daily routine uncomplicated.
