Sojhi ou la Valée des Gorgones, Lifou: Drifting through Gorgonian Corals

Sojhi ou la Valée des Gorgones offers a drift diving experience unlike many, specifically defined by its incredible gorgonian landscape. As you begin your descent, you're immediately welcomed into a world where these delicate, fan-like corals dominate the topography. The current, which can be quite strong here, becomes your guide, gently nudging you along at a depth of around 20 metres, presenting a continuous, dynamic panorama of the valley.

The valley itself is a spectacle of biodiversity, not just in its coral formations but also in the marine life it attracts. Prepare for the sensation of effortless flight as the water pushes you along, offering panoramic views of gorgonians in every imaginable colour, size, and intricate shape. This clear water allows the sunlight to penetrate deeply, illuminating the valley and enhancing the vibrant hues of the soft corals, making the drift a truly immersive visual experience.

The strong current that shapes this valley is also a magnet for larger pelagic species, transforming this gorgonian garden into a dynamic hunting ground. Keep your eyes peeled for barracudas (Sphyraena barracuda) darting through the open water, their metallic bodies catching the light, always observing their surroundings. These powerful predators often patrol the edges of the reef structure, using the current to their advantage as they hunt smaller fish schools.

Beyond the barracudas, the site is known for its shark encounters. Grey reef sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos), sleek and constantly moving, are regular visitors, often seen cruising along the current lines. You might also spot groups of jacks (Caranx ignobilis) moving purposefully. The occasional leopard shark (Stegostoma tigrinum) can be a welcome sight, often found resting on the sandy patches or slowly navigating the coral formations. On more fortunate dives, the distinctive silhouette of a hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini) might appear in the deeper blue, adding to the thrill of this current-swept environment.
