Performance Diver

Located in Auckland, Performance Diver has been a fixture of the New Zealand diving community since 1998. As one of the largest dive equipment retailers in the country, the centre provides a well-stocked base for divers looking to explore the diverse marine environments of the North Island.

The centre operates out of Takapuna, facilitating trips from local access points like the Omaha Boat Ramp and Tairua. Beyond local coastal diving, they also organise overseas expeditions to destinations such as Bali, offering a structured way to experience different marine ecosystems.

The team is led by owner and director John Haynes, supported by manager Anthony Baker and senior instructor Magnus Hammarsal, who has been diving since 1984. This depth of experience is central to the centre's approach to both training and guided excursions.

Instruction is delivered through SSI programmes, with a focus on personalised learning via small group sizes. For guided dives, the centre maintains a ratio of up to six divers per guide, ensuring safety and attention during more complex environments like wrecks or currents.

As an SSI affiliated centre, the course catalogue is extensive, covering the entire progression from Open Water Diver and Advanced Adventurer to professional levels including Divemaster and Dive Instructor. They offer specialised training such as Deep Diving, Wreck Diving, and Decompression Diving for those moving into technical territory.

Skill-specific modules are also available, including Perfect Buoyancy, Navigation, and Night Diving & Limited Visibility. For those interested in technical or niche disciplines, the centre provides instruction in Enriched Air Nitrox, Gas Blender Nitrox/Trimix, and even Recreational Sidemount Diving.

The centre operates a large retail shop, making it a primary source for dive equipment in the region. For those not travelling with their own kit, a full range of rental equipment is available, including regulators, wetsuits, fins, and masks.

Technical capabilities include Nitrox and Trimix support, catering to advanced and decompression divers. The facility is set up to support a wide variety of diving disciplines, from recreational outings to specialized technical training.

The marine life around the Auckland and Northland regions is diverse, ranging from kelp forests to dramatic volcanic drop-offs. You will find various reef species including snapper, blue and pink maomao, trevally, kahawai, and amberjack. Larger pelagics such as jacks and various sharks also frequent these waters.

In the more sheltered areas and reefs, you can encounter species like John Dory, parore, and various types of wrasse. The rocky structures and kelp forests are home to many species, including sweep, silver drummer, and moki.

For macro enthusiasts, the area offers plenty of interest with nudibranchs, octopuses, and various species of anemones. Spiny lobster and crayfish are also commonly found amongst the reef structures.

Seasonal sightings include Manta rays and Mola mola in October.

Conditions vary significantly depending on the site, with the ability to encounter strong currents, particularly at locations like Never Fail Rock. Divers should be prepared for diverse environments ranging from protected coves to exposed outer islands.

Visibility across the region is generally good, with some sites offering clarity between 6m and 30m, though this is subject to local conditions.
