If you are flying on to the Galápagos, Guayaquil has one non-negotiable bit of admin before check-in: collect your Transit Control Card and have your baggage inspected. Be there 2 hours before departure. No less.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
⚠️ 2 hours is what you need for the islands formalities alone.
- The airport has a single terminal, with domestic and international zones under one roof. You walk between them; there is no shuttle.
- ⚠️ The two zones are separated by screening. Moving from one to the other means passing security again.
- ⚠️ If your onward flight is to the Galápagos, 2 hours is not spare time. It is the official time required for the archipelago formalities before you even join the check-in queue.
- No minimum connection time is published. The usual guide is to be at the airport 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international flight.
2–5 hrs
The terminal is basic. The lounge is more or less the only answer.
- Airport Wi-Fi is free.
- ⚠️ There is no proper rest area, no quiet room, and the seating is uncomfortable.
- ⚠️ There are no public showers. The international lounge has the only one.
- A paid left-luggage service operates in domestic arrivals. ⚠️ It closes in the evening, and earlier on some days, so check its opening hours before relying on it.
5–10 hrs
Getting out is straightforward. Just do not lose sight of the islands desk.
- VISA REQUIRED Ecuador exempts holders of most European passports from a visa for a short tourist stay. Check your own passport before travelling.
- ⚠️ Since 2025, nationals of a number of countries need a transit visa for Ecuador, even when remaining in the international zone. Check every passport separately if you are travelling with somebody else.
- You can visit Guayaquil on a long stopover, and the centre is within reach. If your onward flight is to the Galápagos, keep the margin: the desk and baggage inspection come before everything else.
- The airport runs no city tour.
10 hrs +
You sleep nearby. Before an early islands flight, that is often the sensible choice.
- ⚠️ There is no airside hotel. You sleep landside, after immigration.
- VISA REQUIRED Several hotels, including well-rated international brands, are a few minutes from the terminal.
- ⭐ On this particular route, a night in Guayaquil is often wiser than a tight connection: Galápagos flights leave early, and you must be at the desk 2 hours beforehand.
- No airline overnight accommodation scheme is documented.
What catches travellers out
The islands desk comes BEFORE check-in
That is the order that catches people out: you naturally go to your airline desk, then get sent back to the Transit Control desk. With a queue and baggage inspection between the two, a tight connection does not hold.
Domestic and international zones are separated by security
There is only one terminal, which suggests that everything connects. Moving from the international zone to the domestic zone where the islands flights depart means passing security again.
A transit visa applies to some nationalities
Since 2025, nationals of a number of countries need a visa to transit Ecuador, even without leaving the international zone. Check each passport separately if you are travelling with somebody else.

The international departures lounge, near gate 8, sells single-entry access. It is also the only place where you can have a shower.
First misconception dealt with: this lounge is not reserved for a particular cabin. You can enter with a single-entry pass or through a lounge programme, whatever ticket you hold.
There are no public showers at Guayaquil. The international lounge shower is the only one, which matters after an overnight flight from Europe and before joining a Galápagos boat.
The terminal has neither a proper rest area nor a quiet room, and the seating is uncomfortable. There is no middle ground between the public hall and the lounge.
⚠️ There is another lounge in domestic departures, where flights to the islands leave from. Check the zone before buying access: you cannot move between the two without going through security again.
Expect the equivalent of a sit-down airport meal for a few quiet hours, including a shower.

The diver’s reflex
⭐⭐ Before checking in for the Galápagos, go to the desk not the other way round
This is the thing to know at this airport, and most airport guides miss it. To board a flight for the archipelago, you first collect a Transit Control Card from a dedicated desk in the domestic terminal. Go there BEFORE check-in, with your passport and booking. The card stays with you throughout your trip and you hand it back when leaving. Online pre-registration has been available since 2025: do it, and save yourself a queue.
Your baggage goes through quarantine inspection next door
The Galápagos protects its ecosystem with strict pre-departure checks at the same point as the desk: no plant or animal products pass through. For a diver, your kit is exactly what the inspection looks at wetsuit, BCD, fins and booties used elsewhere can carry sand, seeds or organisms. Rinse and dry everything before packing it. This is not administrative theatre; it is the point of the inspection.
Be there 2 hours before departure; the entry fee is paid on arrival
The official time required for these formalities is 2 hours before departure. Add check-in and security, and a short connection from an international flight stops looking clever. The national park entry fee is paid separately on arrival in the archipelago: take what you need to settle it locally, and confirm the amount with your boat before leaving.
