At Istanbul, everything sits beneath one roof, which sounds convenient until you find yourself walking kilometres with a regulator bag. If your layover runs beyond six hours, your airline may already have an arrangement for you.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
Walk, and do not dawdle: gates here are measured in kilometres.
- International and domestic flights share one terminal, so there is no shuttle to wait for. You do, however, walk everywhere, and two gates can be more than 1 km apart. Find yours before doing anything else.
- For international-to-international connections, the published minimum is 75 minutes and you do not pass immigration. A security point for transfers is separate from the main departures security area. Allow 90 minutes if your gates are far apart.
- A domestic onward flight is different: you must clear immigration and change zones. Allow 90 to 120 minutes, never 75.

2–5 hrs
Enough time to eat, sit down and recover an hour of sleep without paying.
- Napzone rest areas are free, open at all times and cannot be booked: reclining seats, subdued lighting and sockets. You will find them airside in international departures near gates B, C, E, F and G; the quietest are around gates E1 to E4.
- ⚠️ Free Wi-Fi is not unlimited: register at a kiosk with your passport, and the complimentary session is short. You can buy an extension at the same kiosks. Register when you arrive, rather than when you need it.
- Showers in the international transfer area are chargeable and sit near the lounge. They are included with lounge entry if you are going there anyway, so avoid paying twice.
- There is paid luggage storage in the transfer area as well as landside. It saves dragging your cabin bag along the full length of the terminal.
5–10 hrs
This is the city-tour window, but it is earned by more than having the hours.
- NO VISA the rest areas, lounge and shower will cover half a day without crossing immigration.
- VISA REQUIRED Turkish Airlines offers an Istanbul guided tour for international transit passengers, including transport, guide and meal. The conditions matter as much as the offer: two international flights via Istanbul, a ticket issued by the airline and the same booking reference, a layover of 6 to 24 hours, and permission to enter Turkey.
- There is an information desk in the transfer area before passport control; official registration takes place at the desk on the Arrivals level once you have cleared immigration. Online registration exists but is not compulsory.
- ⚠️ The airline city tour and airline hotel night cannot be combined on the same layover. You must choose one.
10 hrs +
Sleep is the sensible plan. The question is which side of immigration.
- NO VISA the airside hotel sits in the duty-free area after passport control and can be booked by the hour, from four hours, or overnight. You need a valid international boarding pass: you cannot enter it from the city.
- VISA REQUIRED its landside twin stands at the terminal entrance, within walking distance of Arrivals and without a shuttle. Hotels in Arnavutköy are a little farther on, markedly cheaper, and nearly all provide a shuttle.
- ⚠️ Turkish Airlines accommodates some passengers free of charge, but this is neither automatic nor universal: you need two international flights on a ticket issued by the airline and under the same booking reference, a layover of at least twenty hours, and an application made at least 72 hours in advance. Some fares and award tickets are excluded, and the number of nights depends on cabin class. Check your eligibility with the airline BEFORE booking anything: it decides, not this page.

What catches travellers out
The city tour and hotel night cannot be combined
Turkish Airlines offers both, and plenty of travellers assume they can do one followed by the other on a long layover. They cannot: on the same layover, you must choose. The tour needs six hours; the hotel needs twenty.
One terminal does not mean short distances
You read “one terminal” and relax. There is no shuttle because none is needed, not because it is a short walk. More than 1 km can separate two gates, entirely on foot.
Free Wi-Fi runs out halfway through
The complimentary session is short and requires advance registration at a kiosk with your passport. Many people discover this halfway through a call. Register when you arrive, and do not expect an uninterrupted six-hour connection without paying.
International to domestic is a different connection
The published 75 minutes applies to two international flights. Once your onward flight is domestic, you must clear immigration and change zones: 90 to 120 minutes, and more at busy times.

At Istanbul, you can buy entry to the IGA Lounge without a card or status, and the shower is included.
Clear up the first misconception: lounges are not solely for business-class passengers. You can buy entry here whatever airline you fly and whatever cabin is printed on your ticket.
The arithmetic is simple, though it is often missed. Elsewhere in the terminal, you pay separately for a shower and eat standing up amid the noise; here, entry covers both, plus a chair and a socket.
The free alternative deserves a fair hearing: Istanbul has proper rest areas with reclining seats, and they do the job for two or three hours. The lounge starts to make sense when the wait lengthens, or when you would rather arrive washed.
The lounges you will see in every video are Turkish Airlines lounges. Your ticket or status gets you into those, not a bank card. Check the exact name before crossing the terminal.
Expect the equivalent of an airport sit-down meal for three to five quiet hours, including a shower.

- You can book it by the hour, from four hours, or overnight: a layover of seven hours does not mean paying for a whole night.
- You need a valid international boarding pass to enter. This is for connecting passengers, not an ordinary airport hotel.

- No shuttle to wait for: it is at the terminal entrance, which matters when you are hauling a 25 kg bag.
- If budget matters more than metres, Arnavutköy hotels are markedly cheaper and nearly all provide a shuttle but they add a journey at both ends.

The diver’s reflex
A kilometre on foot with a diver’s cabin bag
Your regulator, dive computer and camera housing do not go in the hold: they are the bits you cannot replace at the resort. That leaves you carrying 10 to 15 kg in the cabin, and Istanbul is where you notice it, because connections are made on foot over long distances. A wheeled bag beats shoulder straps, and airside luggage storage solves the problem for a few hours.
Your power banks cannot be charged in flight
The airline has tightened its rules: power banks are cabin baggage only, with a maximum of two, and you may not use or recharge them during the flight. Spare batteries for your torches follow the same principle never in the hold, terminals protected, unrestricted up to 100 Wh, no more than two between 100 and 160 Wh with prior approval, and refused above that.
Your built-in-battery suitcase may stay behind
Smart luggage with a non-removable battery is refused. If yours has a removable battery, take it out before check-in and carry it in the cabin. It takes thirty seconds at home and can take an hour at the desk.
