Dubai International Airport DXB
DXB runs round the clock across 2,000 hectares, with almost everything you might need except a decent free sleep. Here is how to get through it without donating your time, back or dive bag to the airport.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
Stay airside. Start walking towards your gate immediately.
- Find your gate before doing anything else: between concourses A, B and C in Terminal 3, allow 15 to 20 minutes on foot and by underground shuttle. This is not a connection. It is a hike.
- Terminal 2 sits on the other side of the runways. A transfer to or from T2 cannot be done in under two hours, so check your terminal before you leave home.
- At the smart gates, if you are over 12, look for the green light and walk through. No document scan and no queue. Children aged 4-12 have dedicated desks, where they stamp their own passports.
2–5 hrs
You have time to freshen up and eat properly. Use it; do not merely endure it.
- The Terminal 3 showers are FREE, airside between gates B13 and B19. Very few passengers know about them, so very few use them. After a long-haul flight, they may be the best quarter-hour of the trip.
- The Terminal 3 Zen Gardens, between gates B7 and B27, are the airport's only genuinely quiet patch: greenery, armchairs, nap pods and, crucially, no shops.
- Food outlets operate 24 hours in all three terminals. You will pay more than in the city; that is the convenience, rather than a mystery.
- Free charging stations are airside. Landside, before security, sockets are scarce and contested at busy times.
5–10 hrs
Go out. Properly. The city begins 15 minutes away by metro.
- Leave your bags first. Left luggage is open 24 hours. In Terminal 3, use Emirates Left Luggage on the Arrivals level, near Exit 1, behind Boots pharmacy. In Terminal 1, use Dnata Baggage Services in Arrivals, also near Boots.
- The Red Line metro serves Terminals 1 and 3 directly every 10 minutes, from 5 h to midnight 8 h on Sunday, 1 h on Friday. You need a rechargeable NOL card, sold there.
- A return trip to Dubai Mall fits into 4 hours: the view beneath Burj Khalifa, Dubai Fountain in the evening, then back to the airport. Old Dubai and Dubai Frame need nearer half a day.
- Keep three hours in hand before boarding. Clearing immigration and security on a busy day is not a 20-minute job.
- From June to September, it is still 40 °C at 22 h. Going for a walk does not mean quite the same thing as it does in February: use air-conditioned interiors, or wait for the following month.
10 hrs +
Take a proper room. This is the point at which sleeping beats waiting, and the free chairs do not qualify.
- NO VISA Dubai International Hotel is in the secure transit area of Terminal 3: you do not clear immigration or security again, and you sleep minutes from your gate. Rooms are available in blocks of 3, 6, 12 or 24 hours. ⚠️ Do not look for it on the usual booking platforms; book through airport services.
- VISA REQUIRED Premier Inn and Holiday Inn Express are minutes away, with a free 24-hour shuttle from Arrivals. You get a real bed and shower, but you must leave the airport and enter the UAE. Check that your nationality is eligible.
- NO VISA Sleep ’n Fly pods in Terminals 1 and 3 are a compromise: you fit in them, but do not properly sleep. Use them for a wait too short for a room and too long for an armchair.
- Free rest areas exist in Terminal 3, concourses A and B, near gates A1, A16, A21, A24 and throughout B1 to B32. They are cold, brightly lit all night and noisy. Travellers have also woken up without their phone or laptop bag.
- Most gate-area seats have fixed armrests. That is why so many people end up on the floor. Better to know before 3 h in the morning.
What catches travellers out
Terminal 2 is not simply another hall
It is on the far side of the runways and mainly serves regional and low-cost airlines. T1 and T3 are linked by a free 24-hour shuttle; T2 is not. Confirm your terminal the day before, not from the taxi.
Sleeping free can cost you your phone
Thefts have been reported in rest areas at night. If you lie down, put your bag beneath your head and your phone in a closed pocket. Stay near other travellers or a security point.
At the end of August, the airport is full
During the back-to-school peak, DXB announced an average of 258,000 passengers per day over thirteen days, with more than half a million people on 26 and 27 August alone. If your date is flexible, move it by forty-eight hours.
Terminals 1 and 2 show their age
Everything you read about DXB comfort describes Terminal 3. The other two are markedly more modest and account for most traveller complaints. Do not schedule an eight-hour layover in T1 imagining the Zen Gardens.
You cannot be dropped outside Arrivals by car
The Arrivals forecourts at Terminals 1 and 3 are reserved for public transport and authorised vehicles. If someone is collecting you, arrange to meet in the car park, not outside the door.

Got three hours? You may not realise that you can buy lounge access as a single visit, with no card, status or membership required.
First misconception to clear up: lounges are not reserved for business-class passengers. At Dubai, several can be accessed by any passenger, whatever the cabin on the ticket.
Do the arithmetic most people skip. Three hours in the terminal means food, drinks, noise, armrest seating and keeping half an eye on your bag throughout.
A lounge gives you something different: quiet, a proper chair, reliable Wi-Fi, food and drinks, toilets without the queue, and sometimes a shower. After a long-haul flight, that last bit matters rather more than it sounds.
For a diver, there is another useful point. You can put down 15 kg of cabin baggage without balancing it on your knees, and charge your housing, torches and batteries from a socket that is actually yours.
Book before you leave rather than trying the desk on the day. The popular rooms fill up, and desperation is rarely a sound booking strategy.
Several lounges sell single-entry access, depending on the lounge and terminal.
Where to sleep during the layover?
The only hotel inside the secure area: you sleep without entering the UAE.
- You can book it in blocks of a few hours, which suits a layover that does not warrant a full night.
- It is not on the usual booking platforms and must be booked directly. That is useful because it is the right option here, not because anyone is selling it to you.

More choice outside the airport, but you must enter the UAE.
- Several hotel brands are minutes from the terminals and have shuttle services.
- Consider them only if your nationality allows entry and your layover can absorb two immigration crossings with your equipment.
The diver’s reflex
Your no-fly interval is planned before departure, not afterwards
The commonly accepted rule is to leave 18 to 24 hours between your last dive and flying. In practical terms, if your flight leaves DXB on Sunday morning, your final dive is on Friday, not Saturday afternoon. This is a diary reminder, not medical advice: nobody here is judging your fitness to dive, only helping you avoid discovering the issue after the bag is zipped.
Your torch batteries travel with you, never in the hold
Spare lithium batteries for torches, strobes and power banks are prohibited in checked baggage and must travel in cabin baggage. Below 100 Wh, they are allowed. Between 100 and 160 Wh, you need prior airline approval, often limited to two batteries. Above 160 Wh, they are refused on board. A modern torch battery gets close to the limit quickly, so check its marking before departure, not at the desk.
Do not tour Dubai with 25 kg on your back
This is the standard long-layover mistake. Left luggage operates around the clock and turns a miserable layover into half a day of travel. Put the dive bag down before you go anywhere.
With Emirates, dive kit gets no special allowance
It is treated as ordinary sports equipment: it falls within your normal allowance, by items or weight depending on your ticket, and any excess is handled under the standard rules. There is one specific limit: no item with combined dimensions above 300 cm may go in checked baggage. Check your actual allowance before relying on tolerance that does not exist.
