Marble Arch, Tofo: Exploring the Reef's Arched Passages

Marble Arch, situated as the closest shallow site to the south of Tofo, derives its name from its most prominent feature: three distinct, interconnected arched passages. These natural formations lead you from the sandy bottom, which sits at around 6 to 8 metres, into the inner sanctum of a uniquely donut-shaped reef. The experience of gliding through these arches requires a comfortable command of your buoyancy, allowing for a fluid transition through the reef's natural architecture and its enclosed corridors.

As you approach the entrances of these archways, the dive takes on an immediate sense of anticipation. You'll find yourself greeted by the bustling activity of various reef inhabitants, particularly large schools of yellowfin snapper (Lutjanus fulvus). These vivid fish often congregate at the thresholds, creating a moving curtain of silver and gold as you prepare to pass through. Their presence underscores the vibrancy of the reef and sets the tone for the exploration that lies within its protected passages.

Beyond the snapper, the archways and internal passages of Marble Arch are also patrolled by other resident species. You'll frequently encounter bigeyes, their prominent ocular features giving them a perpetual look of surprise as they observe your transit through their habitat. Adding to this diverse community are the goatfish, often seen sifting through the sandy patches within the reef structure, their barbels actively searching for food, making the entire area a dynamic and engaging environment for observation.
