Galleria, Tofo: Canyon Reefs and Manta Encounters

Galleria offers a distinct dive profile, beginning with a descent into a reef system carved with canyon-like swim-throughs and natural archways. The topography here is three-dimensional, featuring overhangs and crevices that create a dynamic environment. As you navigate these structures, sunlight filters through gaps in the reef, producing striking light effects that illuminate the vibrant marine life within the canyons. This intricate layout provides a sense of exploration, moving from more open reef sections into sheltered passages.

The site's energy is immediately apparent, driven by nutrient-rich waters that attract significant pelagic activity. You will often find yourself surrounded by colossal schools of yellowfin trevally (Carangoides orthogrammus) and bigeye trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus). Visibility at Galleria can extend up to 25 metres, particularly during the months of February, March, April, October, and November, when water temperatures are typically in the low to mid-20°C range. This clear water enhances the experience of navigating the reef's intricate topography and observing the detailed behaviours of both macro and pelagic life. The interplay of light and clear water within the canyon system makes for excellent wide-angle photography opportunities.

While the focus is often on the larger pelagics, the reef itself supports a diverse community of resident species. Turtles are regularly sighted, often resting or feeding along the reef. Keep an eye out for reef sharks patrolling the edges of the canyons and octopus camouflaged within the rocky outcrops. The site's three-dimensional nature, with its archways and swim-throughs, creates numerous hiding spots and micro-habitats for a wide array of marine life.
