The Commodore Hotel

The Commodore Hotel suits you if you want a proper city base with a pool, a restaurant and somewhere to sit down with a drink, rather than a resort designed to keep you indoors all week.

The hotel itself combines practical comforts with a few useful ways to slow the pace: air-conditioned rooms, 24-hour reception, room service, a fitness centre, sauna and massage facilities. After a long day outside, that is a more useful combination than another decorative slogan.

You are in Cape Town, South Africa, next to the V&A Waterfront. The Cape Town Stadium is a 10-minute walk away, and the MyCiTi Station Granger Bay is about 300 metres from the hotel, with another station near the stadium at roughly 600 metres. This is a city location with useful transport nearby, not a hotel standing on its own stretch of coast.

Mouille Point Beach is about 0.6 miles away by the location distance shown for the area. Three more named beaches sit between roughly 1.1 and 1.9 miles away. For the days when you trade fins for sightseeing, the Two Oceans Aquarium is around 350 metres away, while the Springbok Experience Rugby Museum is about 200 metres away. The Clock Tower and Nelson Mandela Gateway are both around 700 metres away, and Zeitz MOCAA is about 900 metres from the hotel.

Table Mountain country is close at hand: Signal Hill is around 1.1 miles away and Lion's Head about 2.6 miles away. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is farther out, at roughly 5 miles. The room choice is mainly about how you want to sleep and how much space you want around the bags. Twin rooms keep two separate single beds, while queen rooms use a large bed; the family options add a sofa bed but remain configured for two guests. If you prefer a little more room to spread out after a day of travel, the Executive rooms and the King Suite are the logical step up rather than choosing by name alone.

Some rooms have balconies facing the Atlantic or Table Mountain, so the view matters when you select your category. The air conditioning is useful in Cape Town's warmer spells, while extra-long beds, a wardrobe and daily housekeeping take care of the less glamorous but more relevant parts of the night. There is also a kettle for the first cup before breakfast, plus satellite television and free Wi-Fi when you are finished with the day's plans.

Private bathrooms include a bath, shower, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer. Accessible queen and twin rooms are part of the room range, and upper floors can be reached by lift. Room service runs around the clock, which is handy when your timetable has been set by boats, flights or fatigue rather than the restaurant.

Breakfast is served as a buffet, giving you the straightforward start a travelling diver usually wants: choose, eat, and get on with the morning. The Clipper Restaurant then moves to an à la carte menu built around seafood and regional wines, so dinner has a clear Cape Town connection rather than reading like a generic hotel menu.

For drinks, there is one named bar: the Admiralty Bar and Lounge. Its cocktail menu runs 24 hours, which covers both the early return and the late arrival without forcing you to organise your evening around a narrow bar window. The hotel also has a coffee house, minibar and tea-and-coffee facilities in the rooms.

When a full meal is more ambition than appetite, the partly shaded terrace gives you somewhere to take a drink or snack. Breakfast can also come to your room, special-diet menus are available on request, and packed lunches are available for days when the city or the coast takes priority over sitting down at midday.

The outdoor swimming pool is the obvious place to reset when the weather plays along, with sun loungers, pool towels and a partly shaded terrace nearby. A garden and sun terrace add quieter places to sit, while the sauna and steam room offer a warmer, less energetic form of recovery. Massage facilities are also available when your shoulders have had enough of carrying bags and pretending to be fine.

The fitness centre gives you somewhere to move without turning the holiday into a training camp. If you would rather leave the hotel, cycling, walking tours and bike tours are available in the area, while hiking, windsurfing and fishing are listed as off-site activities. A golf course lies within 3 km, and horse riding is available away from the property.

The V&A Waterfront does much of the heavy lifting for a non-diving afternoon. The Two Oceans Aquarium, maritime museums, the Cape Town Diamond Museum and Zeitz MOCAA are all within reach, so you can build a day around culture and harbour life rather than simply waiting for dinner.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 18:00, and check-out from 08:30 to 10:00. The minimum check-in age is 18. Children of any age are welcome; children aged 13 and over are treated as adults, cots for children aged two and under can be requested, and extra beds are not available. Children staying in their own room are charged at the full rate.

Private parking is available on site, with no reservation required. Airport shuttle and local shuttle services are available, and car hire can be arranged. The 24-hour reception, concierge, tour desk, currency exchange and luggage storage are practical additions if your arrival or departure does not fit neatly around the room timetable. Cash is not accepted, and a credit card is needed to secure the reservation.

The pool and gym are unavailable during the courtyard refresh scheduled for August and September.
