J-Bay SCUBA

Operating out of Jeffreys Bay and Port St. Francis, J-Bay SCUBA is a local specialist with over a decade of daily experience in the waters of the Eastern Cape. The centre is deeply rooted in the local maritime community, offering a range of services that extend beyond standard recreational diving to include ocean safaris and private charters.

Most dives are launched using a surf launch from the main beach at Jeffreys Bay, providing direct access to the region's varied marine topography. This approach allows for an authentic connection to the local coastline, whether you are exploring shallow reef flats or heading out to more remote pinnacles.

The team is composed of passionate local divers and entrepreneurs, led by owner Paul van Jaarsveld, who brings additional maritime expertise as an NSRI sea rescue lifesaver. This professional background ensures a high standard of safety and local knowledge is integrated into every excursion.

Instruction is provided through the RAID training system, covering everything from initial qualifications to advanced professional levels. The centre maintains a guide-to-diver ratio of five divers per guide, ensuring close supervision and a personalised experience on the water.

J-Bay SCUBA offers a comprehensive curriculum through RAID, catering to all stages of a diver's progression. Beginners can start with the Open Water 20 course, while those looking to advance can pursue the RAID Advanced 35, Explorer 30, or Deep Diver certifications.

Specialised training is also available to refine specific skills, including Enriched Air (Nitrox), Night diving, and SMB deployment. For those moving towards a professional career, the centre provides Dive Master training. They also offer Shark Specialties and Refresher courses for divers returning to the water after a break.

Dives are primarily conducted using a surf launch, which is deployed from the main beach in Jeffreys Bay. This vessel is designed to handle the local swell, allowing the team to reach various reef systems and pinnacles throughout the area. For certain seasons, launches may also take place from Port St. Francis.

The centre provides a full range of rental kit, including both hard and soft goods. You can hire individual items such as BCDs, regulators, masks, fins, and wetsuits if you prefer not to carry your own weight.

For those looking to top up their own equipment, air fills are available on-site. Nitrox is also provided for divers looking to extend their bottom times on multi-dive days.

The reefs are home to a wide array of permanent residents, including various species of coral, sponges, and sea anemones. You will frequently encounter octopus, starfish, and nudibranchs throughout the different dive sites.

For those interested in larger pelagics, the area offers the chance to see Great White Sharks. Other significant sightings can include rays and various species of sharks depending on the conditions.

Macro life is abundant, particularly around the reef flats and sandy patches. Divers can find a rich variety of nudibranchs, sea fans, and sponges, alongside smaller inhabitants like sea urchins and various crustaceans.

The marine environment here can be dynamic, with surface currents often present, particularly at sites like Walls. The swell and wind conditions are significant factors that can influence both visibility and the ease of launching the surf boat.

Visibility typically ranges between 5 and 15 metres. Divers should be prepared for varying conditions, as the local swell can change the character of the dive sites quickly.
