Tropical Barra Hotel sits directly on Barra da Tijuca, with the Atlantic in front of you and the practical comforts of a four-star city hotel behind you. That makes it a sensible base if your Rio plans need both sea air and access to the city rather than a sealed-off resort bubble.

English, Spanish and Portuguese are spoken by the hotel team, so you can deal with the useful things without turning check-in, a restaurant question or a request for help into a game of charades. A restaurant, beach bar, outdoor pool and fitness centre keep the essentials close, while the 24-hour front desk and luggage storage make the hotel workable around flight times and busy days.

Rio's major sights are available as organised excursions, including Sugarloaf Mountain and Corcovado.

The hotel is around 30 minutes by car from central Rio and around 30 minutes from Rio de Janeiro/Galeão International Airport. That is close enough for a city break, but Barra still gives you a proper stretch of coast to return to.

The room choice is mainly about how you want to use the space. Couples can keep things straightforward with a double-bed room, while two friends travelling together have twin-bed options. If three people are sharing, the larger sea-view rooms give you more room to avoid the classic holiday manoeuvre of stepping over somebody else's bag before breakfast. The fitness centre is there for anyone who prefers a short session indoors.
